Love, Interrupted: Jesse and Max

Meet Jesse and Max, yet another binational couple for whom DOMA is robbing them of their freedom to love who -- and where -- they want:

Max and I have never stopped yearning to return to New York. We cannot come back to the U.S. and live as unequal, unrecognized and marginalized human beings. We do want to come back but we want to live in New York legally recognized as a couple. We now live in a country, the U.K., that grants gay and lesbian couples legal status, but this is not our home. As the current law stands, the United States cannot be our home either.

This sad tale is one that is all too familiar. My partner and I have been living in France for the last four and a half years because of the US policies regarding same sex marriage. Although France does not recognize such unions either, at least we can share the same benefits under the PACS (Pacte civil de solidarité). One would think one of the most liberal countries in the EU would have already signed same sex marriage laws already. Maybe one day ...
