Still 'Desperate' After All These Years

As the Film Society of Lincoln Center gears up to celebrate the 25th anniversary of "Desperately Seeking Susan" tonight (no, Madonna's not coming), Dave Itzkoff sat down with Susan Seidelman to get her memories of the classic tale of Downtown '80s New York, and learns that the director had to fight to cast Madonna in the leading role -- actual actresses like Ellen Barkin, Melanie Griffith, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Kelly McGillis had all auditioned -- that that the city's bankruptcy in the 1970s ensured the film's authenticity, and that somewhere in her basement she has a tape of the Material Girl's audition opposite Bruce Willis. Hi Kenneth! are you going to this? i tried to get tickets but typically, it sold out in seconds, according to the guy at the box office. anyway, if you are, have fun! by the way, i know you have a netflix account and i'm sure you own this movie in several formats but it may interest you to know it will be streaming on their "on demand" service very soon!
