Quote of the Day

“I just don’t think the majority care too much about it at this time because they’re out of work, they want to see the state reduce spending, and they are having a hard time making ends meet. And I don’t mean to sound callous, but that’s true.” -- Sen. Thomas W. Libous, the deputy Republican leader, on why the New York Senate voted overwhelmingly against marriage equality.

I mean, really: Who has TIME for gays to marry when these unpaid bills are stacking up?!!!!

Never mind the fact that a poll released Wednesday by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion in Poughkeepsie showed that 51 percent of registered voters supported same-sex marriage while 42 percent opposed it. (Since when doesn't the majority rule on THIS topic?)

I understand your point, Kenneth, but you know it's true. When you're not sure if you're going to make next month's mortgage, you don't give a crap about anyone else or their rights.

Also what I found so upsetting was that my Senator out here in Queens, a Democrat, George Onorato voted against it, as did many other Democrats. I had to write to him and tell him that he has definitely lost my vote. Why are the Equal Protection rights of GLBT people up for a vote anyway?

Libous' comment is intellectual dishonesty at it's best. A) The Senate was already spending the time. And their delay is what caused the House to vote on the same bill multiple times. B) Since when does government only do what the majorit wants? Does Libous think taxes are universally loved by citizens, especially in a recession? A politician with a spine does what is right and/or needed. C) If the economy is the driver here, what about the millions in dollars that would have been spent on those marriages? Now that work, Nd the associated tax dollars, will be spent outside NY (if at all).

If Sen. Libelous, or whoever the hell he is, was so damn busy where did he find the precious time to vote no on equality? What a load of BS.
