A year ago Arizona, my (second) home state, voted overwhelming for a constitutional ban against gay marriage, after having rejected the hate-inspired idea just two years prior. Now back in my original home, following the approval of a nondiscrimination ordinance in Kalamazoo, Rep. Pam Byrnes has introduced a resolution to reverse Michigan's constitutional ban on same- sex marriage. (Sigh.) I know I should be happy -- this is a sign of "progress," right? But all this back and forth is so exhausting, humiliating and apparently counterproductive -- the haters are going after New Hampshire now -- I can't stand it anymore.
David Mixner is fed up too and is calling for a major shake-up: "How can we have any dignity, honor or pride in ourselves if we validate this continued process of ballot box terrorism? How can we stand tall next to each other if we explain away another's cowardliness? How can we allow people to dehumanize our relationships and our very integrity if we give people passes to sit out the battle for our very freedom? No longer are political timelines a reason for delay, no longer are incremental approaches acceptable and no longer can the political process expect us to be patient and wait our turn. Our turn came long ago and there will be no more waiting."
I couldn't agree with him more, but when he starts talking about HOW to implement this revolution it turns into weak threats of holding national organizations "accountable" (ooooh!). I can't think of anything more effective (maybe some retro '90s ACT-UP style stuff?) . The truth of the matter is I never thought I'd be reduced to praying at the altar of Ted Olson, but I'm beginning to see no other option.
