'Julie & Julia': A Perfect Blend

Don't believe the "half great, half not-as-great" nonsense popping up in nearly every review of "Julie & Julia," it's all delicious.

Sure, Meryl Streep is most definitely the "revelation" everyone is making her out to be ("Oscar, Meryl. Meryl, Oscar" -- and one for scene-stealer Jane Lynch too, while you're at it). Every time Streep comes on the screen you will find yourself giddy and laughing -- usually before she even has a chance to say anything. (She's that good and that delightful.) Her chemistry with Stanley Tucci is like nothing you've seen in our generation.

Still, while Amy Adams -- whose eerie resemblance to a young Cynthia Nixon and Pam on "The Office" was almost distracting at times -- may not be the heir to Meryl Streep's throne, nor is Julie Powell a fraction the legend Julia Child is, I found -- go figure -- the drama of her life as a self-absorbed blogger in a relationship -- wondering if you have readers, wondering if you're wasting your time, getting your first comment, getting your first "break" -- to be equally thrilling and equally fascinating as Julia's quest to get her cookbook published. And as great as Tucci was -- and he was -- Julie's hubby, played by sexy Chris Messina of "Six Feet Under" fame, certainly did not disappoint. (Gratuitous ass shot available HERE.) I could almost feel Michael's eyes turn into daggers as Julie's man yelled at her that she "loved that blog" she writes "for strangers" more than she loved him!! For me, to dismiss the Julie half of the film is to miss the whole point. Both women -- Julia Child and Julie Powell -- took their love of good food and the love of a good man and parlayed it into personal happiness and career fulfillment. (As Julia might say, to say their stories don't go together is to say butter doesn't go with -- everything.) And truth be told, as wonderful as Streep is, I can't help but feel like two hours of that voice and those mannerisms would have turned her performance from a brilliant impersonation slash interpretation into over-the-top camp.

My grade: A (loved it; wouldn't change a thing, although I don't think they had those padded mailers back in the day when Julia's cookbook was first published, people!)

If you haven't read Julie's book, definitely do.

I totally agree...the two halves made for a thoroughly entertaining whole in this movie. It was a perfect summer "amuse bouche"! :)

Still haven't seen it, but I plan to. I just want to take a second and brag (and not about MYSELF, for once!)

My good friend, Michelle, just so happens to be Julie Powell's book publicist at Little, Brown, and was virtually responsible for the entire campaign that launched "Julie & Julia" to where it is now. (Michelle gave me an advanced copy of the book in like 2005, and I thought, "What is this crap?" and threw it on my bookshelf where it still sits to this day.)

The "Grace" to my "Will," Michelle and I had drinks the other night after not seeing each other in NINE months. (She is also publicist to James Patterson, amongst a host of other "big-time" authors, unlike yours truly.)

At one point during cocktail-time, Michelle got a text with Julie Powell's itinerary for her "Today Show" appearance (this past Saturday), which she immediately forwarded to a long list of names, including NORA EPHRON.

TOTALLY agree that the Julie part was a really nice complement and actually very interesting, not just 'cuz I'm a blogger. Minor quibbles: Julie's friends scene was very club-over-the-head and I felt there was no transition from supportive to walking out overnight re Julie's hubby. Also, did these assholes really not gain weight eating this shit for a year??? Fuckers. But I really loved it.

Something left out of the movie, but is in the book. Julie did have an affair and had to reconcile with her man. It wasn't all uplifting and the blog did cause lots of strife.

I'm looking forward to both the book and the movie.
Would you say Tucci's performance was "Best Supporting Actor" worthy?

Just another vote of agreement of your opinion... I thought the whole thing was delightful! maybe just a pinch too long (sorry), and I do wish we could have had some resolution to the "Julia doesn't like the blog" storyline... but overall, a great movie full of engaging, fun performances.

My one quibble about the film, in Meryl's final scene (where she walks into her kitchen, her 4-inch heels are not "period". Otherwise, flawless.

Remember when she complained because Burger King stopped cooking their fries in lard, saying they'd lost their texture? I agree. Vegan hippies ruined the fries at Burger King. They should honor Julia by bringing back real fries.
