'Summer' in the City

After losing out on the remaining two seats last weekend to a pachyderm those fat chicks who tried to plow me down in front of the box office in Union Square, Michael and I finally saw "(500) Days of Summer" over the weekend. To say I hated it -- or even disliked it -- would be a bit much. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is extremely likable and his performance was enough to keep me engaged for the most part. But overall, it was like the filmmakers pulled the best scene out of 10 other great movies and crammed them into one too-cute-for-its-own-good love story, one that at times seemed to go on for at least 200 of the 500 aforementioned days. If Gordon-Levitt is the film's highlight, Zooey Deschanel -- whom we're supposed to believe is so adorable that men fall for her around the country -- was pretty irritating. (A straight guy I know who saw the movie mentioned how "annoying" she was, so I'm guessing it's not just my gay blind spot.) The occasional narrator bit (I say either DO IT or DON'T with something like that) and painfully cliched precocious younger sister (GET IT? She's 12 but knows more about love and relationships than her brother who's twice her age???) rounded out the film's list of shortcomings. Grade: C plus. Favorite scene: A clip from "The Graduate."

Thank GOD someone else! I absolutely hated it. "Jesus's abs?" Really? Awkward and intrusive narrator? Stupid references to "A Perfect Day for Bananafish?" How about the completely pointless chronology hopping? And the only way they could justify having a musical number was as a celebration of a straight white man getting laid? GAHH!!!

It was like the entire movie existed for the one good punchline that, finally, ended the movie.

I also saw it this weekend and thought it was lame. I also found the lead actress to be very annoying.

I've seen a lot worse movies lately ('Away We Go' comes to mind), and any chance to spend 2 hours with Joseph Gordon-Levitt is time well spent AFAIC. For me the musical scene you hated so much was the highlight of the movie. He is just so adorable you want to nibble him up one side and down the other.

Zooey Deschanel is a horrible actress. She destroyed what could have been a wonderful take on The Wizard Of Oz in "Tin Man". I despise her! I wish a garbage truck that fell off the top of the Empire State building would fall on her and then drive off with her remains!

I'll be sure to avoid this film as well (as much as I do enjoy Joseph Gordon-Levitt's films (who would have ever thought the little kid from "Third Rock From The Sun" would grow into such a great actor)!
