I Love You, 'I Love You, Man'

On Friday, Michael and I went to see "I Love You, Man," which has to be the funniest film I've seen since "There's Something About Mary" back in '98 -- and the best film with a REALLY BAD trailer since "Clueless" back in '95! While I've been enjoying the Judd Apatow & Co. male-bonding films of the past few years (I thought "Knocked Up," "Superbad" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" were all great), "I Love You, Man" touched me in a whole new way with its poignant yet hilarious look at relationships that completely transcended being gay or straight. I'll leave out details as I don't like reviews that are actually a synopsis (OK, I will say three words: THE CONCERT SCENE!!!), but I truly can't remember EVER relating to big-screen "couples" characters this much in my life (and no, they're not gay), as Michael and I found ourselves patting each other on the leg more than a couple of times when we saw one another up on the screen. (In fact, it may have hit a little too close to home at times: After laughing our asses off for two hours, we ended up getting into a HUGE fight afterward. All's well now, though!) While I certainly understand that film reviews are subjective, for the life of me I cannot figure out how some critics are calling this film "homophobic," "the latest movie to use homosexuality for laughs" and worse. (Are they missing something? The whole point of a "man date" is that it's NOT gay.) These guys are all around my age, but they treat gay people and homosexuality in general the way I see the smart kids of this generation do -- like it's no big deal. Director John Hamburg does too, and while the film has its puerile moments, it's an equal opportunity offender. I predict word-of-mouth will push this movie into being the box office smash it deserves to be. "I Love You, Man" is the first "date" movie I can recall that truly appeals to all persuasions, something that's not easy to do.

I laughed until I cried watching his movie. I didn't see them as "white guys acting stupid" at all. Neither main character was stupid and Paul Rudd's character DID have a lot of friends they were just all women. He has stolen the "embarrassment" humor crown right from Ben Stiller's way less cute head!

I just saw this movie Sunday evening and I have to agree with you whole-heartedly Ken! I loved this movie! It was funny and surprisingly touching. There is nothing cuter then Paul Rudd doing what he does best. My female friend that went with me was disappointed that it didn't have more "frat boy humor" in it. To this point, I do think the trailers are a little misleading. Fantastic movie all and all.

I have to totally agree with you Ken. This movie was fantastic. I saw it Sunday evening with a friend of mine and I didn't stop smiling the whole time. My female friend was disappointed that the movie didn't have more of a "frat boy sense of humor", so in that aspect I think the trailers are a little misleading. I was surprised at how funny and actually moving it was. A great date movie for sure.
