The 'Milk' Round

Although I've been home for a few hours now, I'm still emotionally drained from seeing Gus Van Sant's epic "Milk" earlier tonight. (Nice to see Wilson Cruz and Joey Arias in the crowd, too.) I've been asked to hold off on any review of the picture, but what I will say is it was everything I hoped it would be -- and the perfect (more personal) complement to the Oscar-winning documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk."

Given what gay Americans have been through in the past two weeks, I think it's important that we take a moment to revisit how we got here and make sure our loved ones understand, too. I can't think of a better learning tool. The first thing I thought when I walked out is I'm going to ask my parents to go see this film. And then I'm going to ask every other person I love.

Back in college, I saw a production of EXECUTION OF JUSTICE, the Emily Mann play about the trial of Dan White. (I believe it was later adapted for TV starring Tim Daly.)

I had never heard of Harvey Milk before then, but I was fascinated by his story. After seeing MILK, I'm even more so.

To know what went on during the 70s, long before MY generation came of age (and came out), and to see how hard Harvey and his crew fought to secure OUR rights, makes me ashamed that so many of us have sat back thinking "everything will work out fine."

Seeing this film made me want to go out and kick some Prop 8 ass! So that the gay kids of today will grow up to have it even better than we did.
