that is the one thing the 'no on 8' side failed to do miserably :: demonstrate the societal benefits of gay marriage. I would go as far as saying that those who support prop 8 openly and willfully support the same behavior that they so decry of the gay community :: the openness of our sexual desire. 'Yes on 8' = 'yes to sex on street corners'. Had the Mormons thought about it that way, 8 would have failed miserably.
Given the current state of marriages in the USA, how does anyone think denying gays the right to marriage preserves marriage and families?
If anything, not allowing two people who love one another and want to be committed to one another is a blow to family. It keeps homosexuality marginalized and homosexuals in a second class citizenry. I don't know any heterosexual family that would crumble because gay marriage is legal. But maybe, the stigma of being gay would be lessened to the point that some gays would not be shamed into a doomed and loveless marriage with a member of the opposite sex.
