Music Box: Sam Phillips

Hard-core fans will cringe when I admit this, but I only discovered Sam Phillips a few months ago when this song called "Baby, I Can't Please You" was playing at my local drugstore every time I went in to buy something. I was instantly mesmerized -- it was as if John Lennon and Paul McCartney had mixed their sperm together and inseminated Rickie Lee Jones and out came this brilliantly talented singer/songwriter. It turned out the song was 14 years old (from 1994's unfortunately titled "Martinis & Bikinis"), so I've certainly got a lot of catching up to do (it seems Sam also used to record as Leslie Phillips for a Christian label before turning more mainstream). But trust me, one listen (video above) and you'll be as hooked as I was. (Her brand new album is "Don't Do Anything" and can be purchased here.)

Wow, this brings back memories. I used to be so in love with her voice back in the day. It was pretty unique sounding considering the day. I feel old now.

PS: For a real trip, check her out in Die Hard 3 as the russian bad ass terrorist.

So it's not just me? Lately I've heard that song in stores a lot too. I've loved it since it came out. It popped up on my ipod and a friend asked about it because she heard it in a store too. Weird. BTW - she was (not sure if she still is) married to msuician/producer T-Bone Burnett.

"I Need Love" is one of those turn-it-up-loud, roll-down-the-car-windows, sing-along-at-the-top-of-your-lungs sunny day classics.

Damn, i was gonna be all cool and tell you about her stint as a crazy knife wielding eastern european in die hard, oh well. at any rate, you should check out "if i could write" which also has a pretty kick ass remix by morgan page. you can download his remix album "cease and desist" for free on his website, and "all night" is one of the sexiest songs i know!!!
