No Roman Emperors

Is there another sport where a modification of the game's basic elements can have such a huge impact on the outcome as that of a clay tennis court? (Even a homefield advantage pales in comparison.) Both Andy Roddick and Roger Federer were handily dismissed from the Italian Open today to clay-court specialists. Unsurprisingly, Roddick fell 6-0, 6-4 to Juan Ignacio Chela (this is why his win over Gaston Gaudio was such a shock), and Federer was knocked out by Filippo Volandri, 6-2, 6-4. Despite the fact that he may very well be the greatest ever, Federer's dream of Roland Garros seem increasingly out of reach. Might it already be time to reconsider the Bjorn Borg legacy? (Ticker)

I love Federer but I despair he will ever master the clay court game.
