Kathy Griffin: D-List Confessional

So the well-publicized Kathy Griffin interview with Larry King finally aired last night. Although she was D wait-listed last week when the North Korean nukes story preempted her, it actually worked to her advantage publicywise (and isn't that what it's all about).

First off, I have to say that I thought it was hi-lar-ious that they had a disclaimer -- PLEASE BE ADVISED THIS PROGRAM CONTAINS ADULT LANGUAGE -- at the beginning of "Larry King Live" (which is taped) because Kathy Griffin was on (she's so Lenny Bruce in a dress!).

The interview was pretty fun and interesting (she idolized Rhoda growing up!), although dumbass Larry only "got" about every 20 jokes she made (but when he did, he really laughed). But if Kathy's intention was to set the record straight regarding her separation and divorce from Matt Moline -- as she said it was -- she failed miserably. Even Larry King, who barely listens to anything his guests say, realized the story just didn't "add up." She was evasive about the whole timeline of when the reality show was filmed in relation to when they separated and when they tried to reconcile. (Did this whole thing happen before Season Two or was it before Season One? There are rumors all over the Web on this one.) She said it bothered her that people were wondering if the relationship was staged for the reality-show cameras, yet she didn't say anything to make viewers think otherwise.

Moreover, she completely dodged the key question for me, which is what Matt allegedly took the money for. They were married after all, and spent every waking moment together. Larry all but called her a cheapskate for even caring about the supposed "stolen $72,000," which he pointed out to her that she could earn in no time doing what she does. Kathy looked torn on this one: on the one hand she wanted to act like she was rich like Larry and agree that $72,000 was chump change, yet you could see the little girl from Oak Park, Illinois, inside her saying, "that's a lot of money and it takes someone like me a long time to earn it!" And while Kathy stood her ground that the issue was really about broken trust, her face and body language clearly revealed that she wasn't being entirely forthcoming about the whole situation (and wasn't that why she brought it up?).

While it's true that it's completely "in character" for her to talk about stuff like this, I think the statement Matt issued to CNN regarding the subject speaks volumes -- and very sad volumes at that:

"Since our divorce, I have not made any public comments about my ex-wife or our marriage. It saddens me that she would choose to make such accusations at this time. I have no intention of engaging in a public debate over private matters."
