Goodbye, Dad

William Francis Walsh, Sept. 5, 1932-Oct. 15, 2005

My father was laid to rest on Thursday afternoon on a clear and sunny day in our nation's capital. The funeral service at Arlington was a beautiful and moving farewell to my dad, who served his country as a young man in the Air Force during the Korean War.

I asked a friend to snap a couple of photos during the service because I was afraid that in the whirlwind of the whole day I would not a remember a thing. I was sure wrong about that. As long as I live, I will never forget the details of my beloved father's elegant goodbye: the precision-perfect casket team; the seven riflemen firing three-rifle volleys; the military bugler in the distance playing "Taps"; the formal folding of the flag; and last, but certainly not least, the Arlington lady, who presented the flag and condolences on behalf of President Bush and the secretary of the U.S. Air Force to my brothers and me.

A very special thanks to my boyfriend, Michael, for all of his love and support throughout; and to my dear friends who came out to be there for me on this difficult day, Larry, Ken, Kandy and Kristen; and to my mom, Jenn, Eileen, Mark and Jean for being there in spirit. Love you all.

His beloved children are the best legacy a man can leave behind. Your dad has indeed left an indelible one.
