Weekend Tennis Roundup

Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka came out on top in New York. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.

It must be love

I don't think I could be happier with the way the men's final turned out. Carlos Alcaraz defeated defending champion Jannik Sinner, 6–2, 3–6, 6–1, 6–4, to win his second U.S. Open title and sixth major title overall.

The only thing higher than the level of play was level of mutual respect on display, which is always nice to see in a world of toxic masculinity.

It was an incredible fortnight for the highly likable 22-year-old Spaniard, who now has more titles (7) than losses (6) this year.

On the women's side: I think I might have been more relieved than anyone that Aryna Sabalenka held on to her title, with a straight-sets win over Amanda Anisimova. Sure, the American is quickly becoming the best player to never win a major. But she fared WAY BETTER than she did at Wimbledon. And tennis was spared yet another Slamless No. 1 -- and the Belarusian finally showed she was capable of reining in her emotions when push (nearly) came to shove.

Defending champion looks good on her

After being one point away from defeat, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos turned things around and suddenly went from being the best doubles team to never win a major to winning their second this year, edging Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski 3-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5.

Although the British duo came up short, they still have the best hair on tour.

I'm not as obsessed with rankings as some people are. But this realignment -- with the more dominant in the rivalry on top and Novak Djokovic back in the Top 5 -- definitely sits well with me.

Question: It once seemed crazy to think that Roger Federer would fall behind not one but two players on the all-time majors list, but might he fall even lower? Little Mo, Monica Seles and Tracy Austin show us a lot can happen, but Alcaraz and Sinner really are something special.

Interesting that Luciano Darderi -- fresh off winning three ATP events this year -- opted to play the Challenger in Genova.

He ended winning the title -- beating beat countryman Andrea Pellegino in perhaps the sexiest final of all time -- but you have to wonder if there was appearance money involved or if he's just a good Italian boy at heart.

There is no player sexier than Andrea Pellegrino. It's particularly great that as he nears 30, he's never been ranked higher.
