I never got around to blogging about my trip to Tulsa with my friend Greg, but to put it succinctly, it was pretty fabulous. Someone recently told me Tulsa is known as "the Paris of the South" to which I started giggling -- only to be told they were serious. Then I thought about it some more -- and the rest of the South, as I know it, anyway -- and it kinda was, uh, rather Parisian. So many cool little neighborhoods (such great houses in Midtown), so many fun furniture stores, antique shops, book stores and cafes. The Gay Pride celebration was very "small-town," which is to say it was charming, filled with a lot of misfit young people who probably need a Gay Pride celebration more than a bunch of New Yorkers do. (Greg's not a bar person, so I can't comment on the scene.) His newspaper job isn't being outsourced (sound familiar?) until the end of the year, so he's using these next six months to pursue career opportunities elsewhere. Tulsa struck me as just the right blend of urban/suburban, exactly what Greg is looking for in a city for this next stage of his life. Here's hoping I'll be visiting again soon.
