Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

"Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child" opens today at the Film Forum in Manhattan. Tamra Davis' documentary, built around an interview filmed in 1986 in Beverly Hills that she had stashed away in a drawer after his death, offers a rare look at the celebrated artist who would die of a heroin overdose just two years later.

While not everyone is in agreement that Basquiat was all that important, and Stephen Holden of The Times isn't even overly enthusiastic about the film itself, for this child of the '80s, everything about this film screams "must see."
