Hello and Goodbye

I'm the meat in a "Ciao" sandwich: Alessandro Calza and Yen Tan

Finished off my four-day birthday celebration on Sunday with brunch at Pastis with my Mikey, then over at NewFest with a late-afternoon screening of "Ciao," the latest work by director Yen Tan. I've been following this one for quite some time but yesterday was the first time I'd seen it and I wasn't disappointed. Quite awhile ago Alessandro Calza, the co-writer/star of "Ciao," described it to me as "a gay 'Lost in Translation'" and now that I've finally seen it, I totally understand what he means. The whole thing takes place over the course of a low-key weekend and while it seems like nothing is really happening, by the end you come to realize just how much the characters have learned and revealed about themselves. Keep an eye on the film's official site to see if it is coming to a theater in you. The film is generating considerable buzz and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a distribution deal in the near future.

Afterward, Michael, Matt, Jose and I joined Yen and Alessandro and a group of their friends for a bite to eat. It was great getting to know the whole gang, a great ending to a great weekend.
