Season of Pride

Went to see Tennis in concert tonight at the Rooftop at Pier 17 and must admit the World Trade Center made me feel warm and fuzzy inside, in just the way the Gays of Peloton exemplify so beautifully HERE.

Happy Pride!

Pride Month is now officially behind us, but I hope you all enjoyed every minute of it. Damian and I watched the parade (and danced) with friends until inclement weather brought it to an early halt.

Still, we managed to make the most of the season … despite the dreary forecast provided by a former colleague of mine, which you can check out below. xo 🏳️‍🌈

What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Solidarity?

Another well-meaning article that offers no supporting evidence for its claims that queer minorities are being "denied the rewards" of the LGBTQ movement. (And denied by whom?) Every city, state and federal law to protect queer people applies to queer people of color. And every bad thing happening to queer people of color is also happening at a disproportionate rate to non-queer people of color. Shocker: Stonewall didn't fix institutional racism! As for the trans smoking gun about the Employment Non-Discrimination Act excluding transgender people: It was an attempt to get something on the books -- and guess what? It didn't pass for LGB people, either.

Still, if bringing more attention to queer minorities who contributed is the objective, I can accept a little shoddy reporting ... unless it leads to more of THIS

'Twerk Cop' Michael Hance to Be Posthumously Honored by NYPD Gay Officers League

Just noticed that my post from March about the passing of Officer Michael Hance -- who became a instant LGBT favorite after a clip of him dancing with a marcher in the NYC Pride Parade went viral in 2015 -- was my blog's most viewed to date. So the timing couldn't be more perfect to report that Officer Hance will be honored this week for his outreach to the LGBT community.

It was the twerk seen round the world — a 12-second video clip of a straight NYPD cop dancing with a Pride Parade reveler that quickly became a shining example of the department’s ever-improving relationship with the city’s LGBT community. This Wednesday, that video will take center stage as the NYPD’s Gay Officers Action League posthumously honors the cop in that clip who recently died of a 9/11 related cancer.
Police Officer Michael Hance’s family will be in attendance when GOAL acknowledges the fallen cop with their Ally Award for his impromptu dance as he stood a post during the city’s 2015 Pride Parade. The award will be given out at the 2017 NYPD Pride Celebration at 1 Police Plaza.
“People look at what he did and say, ‘OK it’s a [short] clip’ — but that video was viewed nearly 10 million times,” said GOAL president Brian Downey. “We’re so appreciative of the attention that was drawn by this one act of kindness.”
Aaron Santis was marching with the Big Apple Softball League, an LGBT sports group, when he started dancing in front of Hance. The Queens cop quickly joined in and began grooving to the Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop’ Til You Get Enough.” He then turned and started twerking while Santis was grinding behind him.

The video has been viewed 8.5 million times and never fails to make me smile. The 44-year-old officer died of 9/11 related cancer in March, leaving behind behind daughters Kaitlyn, 12, and Jenna, 10.

L.A. Football Teams Sponsor Venice LGBTQ Pride

Some upbeat news to end your week from the Golden State.

The Los Angeles Times reports:
The Rams and Chargers are in a so-called “Fight for L.A.,” a competition that includes wooing — and accepting — new fans from all parts of Southern California’s diverse population.
Both franchises have reached out to the LGBTQ community to help sponsor this weekend’s second annual Venice Pride celebration of diversity.
Each sponsored a letter in the VENICE sign that will be illuminated Friday at 9 p.m. as part of a sign lighting and block party in Venice.
The Rams committed to sponsor the letter C in early May, becoming the first NFL team to officially sponsor a Pride event, said Grant Turck, executive director of Venice Pride. The Chargers signed on later in the month to sponsor the letter N.
“It opens a place for our community within the NFL,” Turck said. “The ultimate message is: inclusion wins. “If you choose to be inclusive, that’s the more prosperous approach, not just for the LGBTQ community but for everybody.”
Hear! Hear! And for the record, I have been a fan of L.A. football since Howie Long sported a sexy 'stache while playing for the Raiders when they were based there.

Celebrating New York City's LGBT Pride

Took a break from Gay Pride partying this year, only swinging by the Village to see the newly anointed National State Park designation on the Stonewall Inn and Christopher Park -- aka the Stonewall National Monument -- then barely catching the tail end of the parade nestled away from the action on Waverly Place.

Was overjoyed to see Hillary Clinton was "with us" as much as I'm with her.

And was tickled to see the lesbian couple who posed for one of the famous Stonewall Inn sculptures in the park found out about the bar's historic designation from a reporter!

Watch HERE

I also made the acquaintance of my friend Chad's artsy pal (Anthony) A.E. Kieren, who was hired by Julius' to sketch pride revelers ...
