Connie Kopelov, of First Gay Couple Legally Married in New York, Dies at 90
Saddened to read about the passing of the gay-rights pioneer.
The New York Times writes:
Connie Kopelov, whose wedding to Phyllis Siegel in 2011 was the first legal same-sex marriage in New York City, died in Manhattan on Saturday. She was 90. Her death was confirmed by Ms. Siegel, who said Ms. Kopelov had been in the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Ms. Kopelov and Ms. Siegel had been partners for 23 years when they were married by the city clerk on July 24, 2011 — the same day that a state law took effect allowing same-sex couples to marry. That morning, Ms. Kopelov, then 85, and Ms. Siegel, 76, were the first couple through the door of the marriage bureau, on Worth Street in Lower Manhattan. The City Council speaker at the time, Christine C. Quinn, a lesbian and prominent gay rights activist, stood in attendance around 9 a.m. as the clerk, Michael McSweeney, said, “I now pronounce you married.” Ms. Siegel held Ms. Kopelov’s head and kissed her on the left cheek. Ms. Kopelov smiled and held her marriage license aloft. “I lost my breath,” Ms. Siegel said in March, recalling the moment. “It was just the most exciting loss of breath I’ve ever had. I just was so happy.” From that day on, Ms. Siegel said, people would stop them on the street and congratulate them.RIP.

'Chelsea' Showrunner Exits After Just Three Weeks
I adore Chelsea Handler, so would probably watch whatever she came up with. But here's hoping news that the guy who runs her new Netflix talk show has left after nine episodes will mean that the show will change moving forward. I know she was hoping to make this one more educational. But the best part of "Chelsea Lately" was always the round table -- where she could interact and react to people, her bread and butter -- so 30 minutes with no commercials is a lot of time to fill up trying to make kooky celebrities seem interesting (sorry, Gwen Stefani) and cabinet members seem entertaining. Perhaps she should do what she did on the episode with Chris Evans where she films a group of people at a dinner table discussing a given topic. I couldn't care less about super heroes, but this give-and-take format allowed her to shine, so it didn't even matter. This is what she did on most of her "Chelsea Does ..." specials, and it might be the way to go with "Chelsea" moving forward. Doing the first streaming talk show was always going to be a trial-and-error effort, so there's no shame in shifting gears. Here's hoping things start moving in a funnier direction.
Now if Chelsea could just get him to TAKE HIS PANTS OFF again ...

Song of the Day: 'The Water Lets You In ("Bloodline" theme)' by Book of Fears
As you may recall, Damian and I went against type and watched a fictional drama last year -- Netflix's "Bloodline." Although I found myself morphing into my parents -- who seemed to spend more time speculating about what was going to happen next than actually watching shows like this when I was a kid -- we couldn't deny being intrigued by the sudsy Southern mess the Rayburn clan was. Dove into the Season 2 premiere last night and I have to admit we'd have been well-advised to have rewatched Season 1 in its entirety -- things are that convoluted and a year is a long time away -- but would be lying if I didn't confess that they have already thrown out enough bread crumbs for me to want to see where this train is headed, a train I once thought had already reached its destination. Anyone else watching? The incredible cast including Kyle Chandler, Linda Cardellini, Chloe Sevigny and Sissy Spacek is reason enough to give it a chance.

Why Bernie Conspiracies Don't Amount to a Hil of Beans
Great graphic illustrates what I've been saying all along: If Bernie Sanders were really the choice of the people, he would be beating her -- like Barack Obama did.
"The Democratic Party -- the party that gave this country its first African-American President, the party that is poised to give this country its first woman nominee of a major party and very likely its first woman President, a party chaired by a Jewish woman, a party which features the first openly gay member of the United States Congress on the party's rules committee -- isn't 'progressive' enough or inclusive enough according to a 75 year old straight white male who 'white flighted' his way out of the most ethnically diverse city in the country to the whitest state in the northeast United States and who just passed his 1 year anniversary of declaring himself a member of the party that he thinks that he is the only fit candidate to be the party's nominee for President. A nomination which if he can't secure it by the ballot, has threatened to secure it by lawsuits and more than just hinted at violence. Am I getting this right?"It seems no one -- not even AIDS activist Peter Staley -- is pure enough for Sanders supporters ... they've become truly insufferable.
