Pride Flag’s Removal From Stonewall Violated Federal Law, Suit Says
Longtime readers know I used to be pretty obsessed with New York's tabloids, even briefly working at one of them. I haven't been paying much attention to any news outlets since the 2024 election, but I was heartened to come across these two recent covers of the Daily News. With reports of a lawsuit against the administration over the flag's removal, might a third front page be in the works?

Let Russian Daria Kasatkina Play Under the Rainbow Flag
The New York Times has a great piece on how the war in Ukraine has turned tennis into a battlefield, the highlight of which was learning that Elina Svitolina's grandmother refuses to leave Odesa because she couldn't bear to be apart from her cat! (I asked Damian if he'd leave the Upper West Side if Moscow invaded and reached, say, Weehawken, N.J., right across the Hudson River from us and he said no way!) Also fascinating to learn that many Ukrainians are abandoning their first language -- Russian -- and migrating to Ukrainian. But one critical point that I think is lost in the vitriol many Ukrainian players feel toward their Russian counterparts, who they see as complicit in their silence, is that they and their families could EASILY GET MURDERED if they are too vocal in their opposition to Putin. (Surely they must understand this, no?)
That goes double for Daria Kasatkina, who is in violation of Moscow's so-called "anti-gay-propaganda" -- now with even more hatred -- law by merely existing. Her suggestion of playing under the Rainbow flag may have been in jest, but it sounds like the perfect solution to me.

Tempest in a Coffee Pot?
Starbucks workers at 150 stores launch strike over Pride décor
The coffee chain denies allegations that some stores banned or restricted decorations commemorating LGBTQ+ rights
I haven't got time to summarize the entire article, but I don't know about this, guys.
[Run-on sentence alert:]
When you're complaining about something extraordinarily vague -- they can put up Pride decorations but maybe not the ones they wanted to??? or as many as they wanted???? or????? -- alleged to have been done by a company that seems pretty progressive, particularly where LGBT people are concerned. (The company extended full healthcare to same-sex partners in 1988 and added coverage for gender-reassignment surgery in 2013.) And one of your chief complainers identifies as “asexual” -- are asexual people being denied rights, jobs or housing? -- and admits he hasn’t experienced any of what’s being alleged, it’s hard not to see these “queer” (whatever that means) workers as being guilty of refusing to take yes for an answer.
Don't get me wrong. I’m pro-labor and don't support the company’s attempt to prevent unionization. But I’m also pro-rationality.
Are these young people sure they're not just misguidedly "envious" of the activists who came before them, who fought actual discrimination, and that they're not trying to look for trouble where little exists? Because at the rate we're going, I don't think we can afford to alienate any more allies.
In a letter to employees posted Friday on Starbucks’s website, CEO Laxman Narasimhan noted that a Pride flag is currently flying over the company’s Seattle headquarters, just as it has in past years.
“We want to be crystal clear: Starbucks has been and will continue to be at the forefront of supporting the LGBTQIA2+ community, and we will not waver in that commitment,” Narasimhan said. “As such, we strongly disapprove of any person or group, seeking to use our partners’ cultural and heritage celebrations to create harm or flagrantly advance misinformation for self-interested goals.”

LGB Without T?
I'm not saying I'm on board with the so-called LGB Without the T sentiment that is currently trending on Twitter. But as someone who has edited a lot of business copy, I've learned that many companies that become too bloated do indeed blossom when they split in two, allowing them become more focused and better-equipped when they specialize in what they're doing.
Of course, this will never go anywhere because it's mainly fueled by strange (read: ugly, name-calling) bedfellows I don't want anything to do with: No, the trans community is not "sexualizing children," "mutilating minors" or "betraying the gay community."
Read why a transgender power-lifter wasn't too happy when a self-identified woman went up against her in Alberta HERE.
But sexuality and gender identity are two entirely different things. And biology is real, which is why I find it baldly disingenuous that so many smart people who beg everyone to "believe in science" seem to say otherwise here. Ultimately, though, being a gay man or lesbian woman has nothing to do with people who are neither genders (or both) and/or people who desperately need medical intervention to be their authentic selves. So it's unfortunate that we can't get gender-diverse people the specialized medical and political allies they need, stat.

L.A. LGBT Center CEO: 'You're Here. You're QUEER. Get Used to It'
Well that didn't take long. Less than 24 hours after posing the metaphysical question about what a dead gay man might think about being posthumously identified as "queer" did I get an answer for my alive and kicking self.
Joe Hollendoner, CEO of the Los Angeles LGBT Center -- which happens to be the largest facility in the world providing services to LGBT people -- had this to say in part about elected officials in the city of Huntington Beach, Calif., barring the Pride flag from flying over City Council during Pride month:
“The Greater Los Angeles area is for everyone and yet Huntington Beach officials landed on a cliche and reductive approach to making headlines: marginalizing queer Californians … sending us a clear message of hate and shamelessly putting young, queer lives at stake. Huntington Beach’s officials are taking a cue from the political playbooks of extremist politicians across the country -- using their hatred of queer and trans people as launching pads for their careers. …”
Hollendoner is correct that what HB is doing is abhorrent. But some 33 years on since the formation of Queer Nation, I have yet to figure out how using the term "queer" to represent all LGBT individuals -- a tired and forced attempt at provocation -- does anything but alienate people outside and INSIDE our community.

Supreme Court Rules Civil Rights Law Protects Gay and Transgender Workers
Has Neil Gorsuch been working out? 😎
The New York Times reports:
The Supreme Court ruled Monday that a landmark civil rights law protects gay and transgender workers from workplace discrimination, handing the movement for L.G.B.T. equality a stunning victory.
The vote was 6 to 3, with Justice Neil M. Gorsuch writing the majority opinion. He was joined by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen G. Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.
The case concerned Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars employment discrimination based on race, religion, national origin and sex. The question for the justices was whether that last prohibition -- discrimination “because of sex”-- applies to many millions of gay and transgender workers.
The decision, covering two cases, was the court’s first on L.G.B.T. rights since the retirement in 2018 of Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, who wrote the majority opinions in all four of the court’s major gay rights decisions.EXHALE!
Truth be told, one of the main reasons Damian and I had planned to marry in May is because we didn't want an anti-LGBTQ Supreme Court ruling tainting our ceremony. The coronavirus still persists, but this threat has now thankfully been lifted.
It’s probably hard for some people to believe -- and a little embarrassing for me to admit. But three of the happiest days in my life were on the days the Supreme Court recognized me as an equal citizen under the law. (Lawrence v. Texas; Obergefell v. Hodges; and today.) It’s easy to put on a brave face and act like you don’t care about discriminatory policies, especially when you live in a progressive part of the country where you are unlikely to be directly affected. But I cannot stress enough how demoralizing it is to have your own government say you are less than -- and how good it feels to know future generations won’t grow up with the shame I did.

Rights of Gay Employees Up Next on Supreme Court Docket
For those who need a quick rundown, here's what Gorsuch and Kavanaugh are being handed tomorrow:
The Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court to OVERTURN a ruling the U.S. government won -- yes, its own government -- in favor of a transgender woman funeral director. (Seriously.)
Another case involves a man who was fired from his job in Georgia when his employer found out he played in a GAY SOFTBALL LEAGUE. When he filed suit in his home state, the Atlanta-based 11th Circuit dismissed it in an unsigned opinion relying on decades-old regional precedent allowing employers to discriminate against “effeminate” men. (Yes, seriously.)
I am beside myself, but at least we don't have the e-mail lady.

So Woke You're Asleep
Sigh. I adore the person who posted these. But boy is this NOT the way to win people over or educate them. So it was wrong to *not* report/talk about these heinous crimes -- and now it’s wrong *to* acknowledge them, if it’s not done to someone else’s standards? Nothing is ever good enough anymore. I’m truly at a loss for how so many well-meaning people can be so clueless, so I’ll stick with cat videos.

Social Club
When you read about the terror campaigns launched against people like Leslie Jones and Ruby Rose, it's easy to think of social media as a scourge. And it can be. But then I remember that a quality social network really does have value: Like when a "friend" really makes you think about something, or takes the words right out of your mouth.
Rebecca Oh but there is a controversy. Of course. A straight actor will be playing a gay character, and the identity police are freaking out about that.
Soon right-handed people won't be able to play lefthanded people. I understand the original sentiment and concern - as in, caucasian playing asians etc, but i think we are taking it too far. I am fine with a straight actor playing a gay actor.

This first example is more of the "thought provoking" genre, in the best possible way. On the one hand, Peter is right. There are more important things right now than a Disney character. But never underestimate our ability to walk and chew gum at the same time. When you hear from someone like commenter David it really drives home how important it is for us to be seen. But Rebecca is on to something, too.
Fred was having none of it, and his reasoning was sound -- on paper. The problem is, for so long ANYONE wasn't allowed to play ANY role, no matter how good he, she or they were at it.
So where do we go from here? Yes, it is wrong that for so long LGBT actors have either had to remain closeted to work or not be considered for roles. And now that things are improving, it's important that we remain focused on the goal at hand. When I hear people freak out and say that if LGBT people want to play all of the LGBT roles, then only straight people should be cast in straight roles, it smacks of people whining about Black History Month by saying, "Why isn't there a White History Month?" (We're making up for a lot of lost time here, folks!)
What next: Should people with dyed red hair not be able to play redheads because they haven't actually lived the "ginger experience"?
This one I could have written myself -- especially when a D.C. cabbie repeatedly couldn't find my friend Ken's new house when I was already beside myself visiting my brother Bill when he was diagnosed with cancer. I don't want cab drivers to lose their jobs, but for f**k's sake -- it's 2018! I love going online and immediately feeling I'm not alone ...
Yesterday, coming back from JFK after a brief and exhilarating trip to Mexico City, I had a very grumpy oldtime NYC cabbie who had no idea where my address was but nonetheless had no GPS. I ended up insisting he follow my orders as I ran my own GPS from the backseat, nostalgic for the days when you could pour yourself into a cab, give your address and then stare blankly out the window instead of having to participate in a job you are also paying for. My cranky cabbie glared and said nothing as I tipped him $10 and bid him adieu, resisting the urge to tell him one more time that he should use a GPS app. And yet despite this I still support the news that NYC is capping Uber and other app services. All I could think about yesterday with my grumpy cabbie was the five old-school NYC cabbies who have killed themselves recently, their livelihoods put under by ride-hailing apps that I know provide income and flexibility for ordinary people but that also primarily make billionaires out of douche-y tech bros who think they are masters of the universe. I don't want to live in a word where endless, unregulated innovation and app-based "disruption" puts working people out of work and drives them to suicide, meanwhile creating new gig-based jobs that slowly eat away at our long 20th-century tradition of jobs that come with protections and benefits.
What's your take -- do you think the pros outweigh the cons of social media?
