Remains of the Day (12/31)

I'm sincerely sorry to hear about the passing of Phyllis McGuire

Tell me my mother was wrong when she predicted a decade ago that social media would be the downfall of the world.

We are doomed

We are doomed II

I was heartened when I saw he'd scrubbed the parties from his website. Turns out, all he did was move them underground

When you're right you're right

It's going to be so nice having an adult in charge again

This reminds me: 'The Odd Couple' is now streaming on Hulu!

Song of the Day: 'I Wanna Be Sedated' by the Ramones

It's a shame Joey and the boys aren't still with us to enjoy this most Ramone moment, but let the countdown begin!

Fun note: Although the song came out in 1978, the video wasn't filmed until 10 years later, as a promo for the compilation album "Ramones Mania."

Wikipedia notes:
The iconic clip features the Ramones sitting at a table (left to right: Johnny, Joey, Marky and Dee Dee), nonchalantly reading and eating generic corn flakes (branded "Corn Flakes") whilst the background hallway erupts into a venue for nuns, acrobats, ballerinas, monsters, cheerleaders, clowns, doctors, fetish nurses and smoking schoolgirls. The film is intentionally sped up to show the excitement of the background, while the band's actions are in regular motion. This was achieved by having the band members move very slowly, while the crowd moved normally, and then speeding up the film. (Be on the lookout for a young Courtney Love!)

Song of the Day: '(Let's Do) the Blackout' by Josie Cotton

Here's a blast from the past. To celebrate the re-release of "Convertible Music," Josie Cotton has added "(Let's Do) the Blackout" and -- the B-side of "Johnny, Are You Queer?" -- and released a music video, about which she writes:

People always think what they find on YouTube are videos I did early in my career, when most were just clips from tv shows I was on. The truth is I never got to make a video for "Convertible Music." It was ironic since my manager at the time was good friends with the head honcho at MTV, where unknown  alternative artists became mega-stars in the 1980’s. All the sets were built and ready to film videos for 3 songs, including “Johnny Are You Queer?”. But the night before the shoot my record company decided there was “no future” in video. {Fade to black...Sound of girl being   hit by cement truck}

Over the years I’ve made a number of videos for numerous releases but "Convertible Music" was always the one that got away. Cut to 2020 where I miraculously got the rights back to my first 2 albums. I got right to work re-releasing my own music, and from the start I knew I wanted to include a bonus track on "Convertible Music." It also seemed like the perfect time to finally make a video for it and one song immediately came to mind.  “Blackout”, originally the b-side to Johnny Are You Queer?” (turns out some songs are merciless attention whores!) was always a favorite of mine and now was going to get the attention she deserved. An anti-dance dance song that you can dance to...about a dance that probably doesn't exist but you desperately want it to.

Everyone at Kitten Robot knew the footage in this video had to be completely authentic. But we quickly learned how rare it was for anyone in the 80’s to actually point their video cameras at the audience or to scan the hipster clubs where it was all happening. Eventually, after watching hours of grainy, blurry, frantic footage...we found the lost footage that embodied the Blackout to us.

This video is a time warp from another time warp. And after we finished I found myself missing an era that I never think about. I’m as guilty as anyone of thinking of the 80’s as more innocent than relevant...with its androgynous fashion of no tomorrow, Go-Go boots from hell and the long abandoned hairspray gods. No one knew where it would all end... but for the foreshadowing.

You can see it in their dancing and on their faces… they belonged to that moment completely. It had an urgency I wasn’t expecting when we started. Music and art was all there was... and that’s not such a bad thing, looking back. It’s actually a little contagious, and I hope the long awaited “Blackout” video captures that.

Enjoy. -Josie ♥

Remains of the Day (12/29)

McConnell blocks Democrats’ attempt to quickly approve $2,000 stimulus checks amid pressure on GOP to act

Wouldn't wanna get on Donny's 'naughty' list

Does Robert Trump's death certificate say the cause was 'Kung Flu'?

So many NextGen American players get it, yet we're still saddled with this ...

Are you sure? Definitely looks like they improved his jawline.

This one hurts ... just 55 years old.  More HERE.

Casey Lee Ross, a stunning dancer who has appeared on my friend Matt's blog many times, has died suddenly, according to his social media.

In a career spanning more than three-quarters of a century, he remained a futurist, reproducing fashions for ready-to-wear consumption and affixing his brand to an outpouring of products.

Gay White Party Producer: Virus? What Virus? -- UPDATE

Anyone know why Jeffrey Sanker -- noted producer of the White Party in Palm Springs -- is planning a big weekend of New Year's Eve parties in Puerto Vallarta during the deadliest month of the deadliest pandemic in our lifetimes? (One event is already sold out.)

He's hardly the only one behaving like this -- in fact, the Washington Post reports that more Americans are traveling to Mexico’s Riviera Maya than ever before, which in turn is leading to more coronavirus cases -- but I'm getting really tired of seeing my gay brothers who fought through the darkest days of AIDS carrying on like Covidiots.

Sanker's Facebook page describes him as a "humanitarian," something he may want to edit if he insists on putting thousands of queer people's lives at risk.  (His 2021 White Party is also going ahead as if nothing was wrong.)

How quickly we forget.

A cursory search of (poorly translated) news shows that hospitals in Puerto Vallarta are already at the breaking point, with the state reaching a 65% positivity rate.

Still from what I hear, he is treated like royalty in Palm Springs because of all the money his White Party brings in so it's doubtful the largely LGBTQ City Council will say a word to condemn his wantonly irresponsible behavior. People reading his public Facebook page, however, weren't so timid.

One wrote:
I hope you and those attending your event in PV have a birthday next year to celebrate! Once a Pioneer for your community and now a tired has been making a buck and endangering the lives of others. Shame on you!
Meanwhile, the Puerto Vallarta Daily News posted this on Facebook:
If you are interested in still visiting the COVID Superspreader New Years Eve Celebration where foreigners come to our community and throw big parties and leave COVID while causing our businesses to close and people lose their jobs, they have changed their mega party to Riviera Nayarit and even offer a nice closed bus to transport you there with a lot of people packed together. 🤷‍♂️ COVID isn't causing businesses to suffer, it's the actions of people.  We are tired of it. We have supported this event in past years and given it positive coverage, but this year it's irresponsible and should be canceled.
Sanker didn't respond to requests for comment.

UPDATE:

Sanker has still not responded to me. But the New Year's weekend parties no longer appear on his website, and the Palm Springs White Party link now just says "More information coming soon."

While I would like to think he has decided to heed the warning of the Centers for Disease Control as well as the wishes of the locals in Puerto Vallarta, it looks like he's just trying to go underground now with a new (trying-to-keep-it) undisclosed location:

Pathetic.

 UPDATE: Jan. 1, 2021

Remembering 'Ice King' John Curry

Damian and I stumbled upon a documentary called "The Ice King" the other night and were blown away. It's about John Curry, who some believe is the greatest ice skater of all time. Won't lie, I was not familiar with him at all, despite his winning the gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck alongside Dorothy Hamill -- I had her haircut, so ... -- and his being out(ed).

That I grew up with Dorothy, JoJo Starbuck and Peggy Fleming as household names makes me think that male figure skaters weren't as "big" as women back then, although nationality may have been the main reason. (Scott Hamilton is the first Olympic gold medalist whose name I knew, followed by Brian Boitano -- who people thought was my college boyfriend's twin!)

I don't want to give away too many details -- those of you who are familiar with the British skater's story already know what I'm getting at -- but it's no understatement to say Curry was truly a trailblazer on so many levels, both on and off the ice.

That I'd never even heard of him makes me sad -- and is a perfect example of why LGBTQ history in schools might be warranted. I'm not sure if Curry would make the syllabus or not, but surely some fun student would write a term paper about him and keep his story alive, as this documentary so brilliantly does.

"The Ice King" is the searing documentary of a lost cultural icon, a story of art, sport, sexuality and rebellion.

We watched it on the LGBTQ streaming service Dekkoo, where during our trial we also caught "Un Rubio." "The Blonde One," as it's called in English, is a little but intriguing Argentinian film about the relationship between two roommates, both of whom have had varying degrees of self-acceptance about their sexualites.

The one-two punch of these two fine films has me considering a paid subscription, although I'd be lying if I didn't admit they're all starting to add up. I see the service has its own series as well. Let me know if you are into any of Dekkoo's original offerings as I make my decision before my free 10 days is up!

P.S. I hear that "The Ice King" is also streaming on Tubi, can be rented on Prime Video HERE and purchased on DVD HERE.

Song of the Day: 'Ugly Xmas Sweater Party' by Girlhouse

Gotta share this before the season is officially over, what has to be the best modern-day holiday song since "This Christmas" by the Shoes and "Calling on Mary" by Aimee Mann.

As far as I can tell, they only have two songs, both of which came out in 2020!
