Song of the Day: 'Live to Tell' by Madonna


Today's pick was inspired by my pal Jeremy Kinser, who fondly writes:
"I know where beauty lives." 

[This week] marks 35 years since the release of Madonna's greatest ballad "Live to Tell." I know what you're wondering. How does a guy in his late 29s know so much about a recording released before he was born? I'm a lifelong Madonna stan and have researched every bit of minutiae about her and should be hired as a fact checker for her biopic if it really comes to fruition. 

Anyhoo, "Live to Tell" is among her top five greatest singles, if you ask me. I have full recall of the first time I heard it, as I was blown away by her vocals and the lyrics. I've had two young friends die during the past week so the lyrics have taken on special meaning to me. I hope I live to tell all someday.

I feel the exact same way. I never saw "At Close Range," the film starring her then-husband, Sean Penn, for which it was written. But the song -- and the simple video -- felt like a new, grown-up version of the virginial material girl we had been loving the past few years had been born. And it was the first in a string of sublime ballads to come, that would prove to be some of her finest songwriting ever.

Tennis Tuesday

 

I've written about how bad tennis films tend to be. But somehow even I managed to completely block out 1982's "Spring Fever," perhaps the worst of them all. Even having an actual tennis player -- Canada's Carling Bassett, who was once ranked as high as No. 8 in the world -- star so as to avoid the embarrassing tennis-playing parts did nothing to improve this Susan Anton vehicle(!), about a loose Vegas showgirl who faces snobbery when she takes her daughter to compete in a national junior tournament in Florida. Still, despite its obvious shortcomings, the film did have ITS MOMENTS.


(And how's this for an eerie coincidence: Jessica Walter played the queen of the snobs!)

Song of the Day: 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick' by Ian Dury and the Blockheads

 

I must have saved this because it was the week Blondie's "Heart of Glass" hit No. 1 on the charts. For a moment I thought this was Billboard list -- until I realized the U.S. would never have a song as odd and fun as Ian Dury's "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" on it. (It too hit the top spot!) 
 

Dury's life as the son of a chauffeur is in keeping with his offbeat persona.


Dury sadly died in 2000 at just 57 after his colon cancer metastasized. But his son, Baxter Dury, is carrying on the quirky family tradition -- most recently with the critically acclaimed album "The Night Chancers" that came out last year.

Song of the Day: 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' by Roberta Flack

 

Among the many great moments of "Play Misty for Me" was the love scene between Clint Eastwood and Donna Mills, getting it on outdoors to this classic hit, one of Roberta Flack's five No. 1 singles. ("Killing Me Softly With His Song," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Where Is the Love" and "The Closer I Get to You" being the others.) 


"The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face" was written by Scottish political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl -- father of the great Kirsty MacColl -- for Peggy Seeger, with whom he was having an affair and later married. (Folk legend Pete Seeger is her half-brother.) During the 1960s, the was recorded by various folk singers and became a major international hit for Roberta Flack in 1972, winning Record of the Year and Song of the Year. at the Grammy Awards. Billboard ranked it as the No. 1 Hot 100 single of the year for 1972.

25 Facts About 'Play Misty for Me' (1971)


In honor of the late Jessica Walter, Damian and I watched "Play Misty for Me" last night. Neither of us had seen it before -- politics aside, I can watch a man as beautiful as Clint Eastwood for days and my guy's a Northern California aficionado, so I knew the scenery alone would thrill him. But of course it was Jessica who stole every scene she was in -- and even the ones she wasn't. (It's no exaggeration to say Damian turned to me early in the film and said "I got chills" when the legendary actress first reveals who her character really is.) And to think Universal Pictures wanted Lee Remick to play the role! Enjoy 24 other bits of trivia about the groundbreaking film HERE.

If what is alleged by an ex-girlfriend is true this guy sounds like a real piece of shit -- but do we really need to know about this at all? I guess Twitter is now the Yelp for all relationships

Both CNN and the Washington Post -- with all the protections American media enjoy -- settled with Nick "I smirked because I was in an incredibly uncomfortable situation so I must be a monster' Sandmann for a reason. I'm not saying Kathy owes them any money. But the media got it wrong and so did she, so I'm not sure gloating is the way to go here. (Now can we never think of them again?)

After Trump tried to intervene in the 2020 vote, state Republicans are moving to take more control of elections 

I'm guessing Darrell forgot when Trump, like so many Republicans have before him, said the GOP would ‘never’ win elections again if it was easier to vote
