Song of the Day: 'Istanbul' by the Breeders

I'm starting to realize I didn't give the (fake) Breeders enough credit for their 2008 LP,  "Mountain Battles." But ever since I saw them perform "Night of Joy" and "Bang On" -- which meshed effortlessly with their back catalogue -- on the band’s recent stop at Bowery Ballroom, the album's been in heavy rotation over here. While it's great that the classic lineup is back together -- "All Nerve" is fantastic -- “Mountain Battles" might just be the second-best thing Kim Deal's ever done, after "Last Splash." This is one of the odder songs, which makes it all the better.

Five Dead, Others ‘Gravely Injured’ in Maryland Newspaper Shooting

So help me God if the NRA tells me I need to arm myself with more than my sharp tongue. This is the first time I've actually hoped this is the work of a disgruntled employee -- because I can't even begin to deal with the prospect that it's some loon following the right's instructions.

The Baltimore Sun reports:
At least five people were killed and several others were “gravely injured” in a shooting Thursday afternoon at the Capital Gazette in Anne Arundel County, authorities said.

A shooter is in custody, police said. Police would not name the suspect or say what type of weapon was used.

Police said a “long gun” was used in the incident. They said officers did not exchange gunfire with the suspect, who was now being interrogated. They said officers had recovered what appeared to be an “explosive device,” and had “tactically secured” the building. About 170 people were inside at the time of the shooting, police said.

Phil Davis, a Capital Gazette crime reporter who was in the building at the time of the shooting, said multiple people were shot, as others — himself included — hid under their desks. He said there was a lone male gunman.

“Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. Can’t say much more and don’t want to declare anyone dead, but it’s bad,” Davis wrote on Twitter as he waited to be interviewed by police.

“There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload.”

In a subsequent interview, Davis said it “was like a war zone” inside the newspaper’s offices — a situation that would be “hard to describe for a while.”
(The gunman is reportedly a white man, which explains why he wasn't killed on the spot.)

Dylan Farrow's Train in Vain

I wholeheartedly support the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. But each case needs to be judged on its own merits. I've yet to meet a person who has taken the time to thoroughly examine the Woody Allen allegations who is still convinced of his guilt -- and it appears I'm not alone.

Song of the Day: 'Turn to You' by the Go-Go's

This one didn't light up the charts the way some of their previous releases did -- it stalled at No. 32 and would end up being the band's last Top 40 single -- but the video was awfully fun, in an "ahead of its time" way!

UPDATE:

The Go-Go's were interviewed by the Los Angeles Times about their upcoming gigs at the Hollywood Bowl and the band's tumultuous past few years. Jane Wiedlin, who is widely believed to be behind Kathy Valentine's forced exit, had this to say about it:
Shortly after all that happened, I started wondering if we’d done the right thing. And I started thinking, I don’t think it’s any better without Kathy here. Let’s face it: Over our 40-year period there have been so many alliances and feuds between every combination of the five of us. That’s nothing new, but for some reason at that point in our lives, we just freaked out. If I could take it back, I totally would. But I can’t. So all I can do is make amends to Kathy and move on.
