Russell Leung Awarded ACES Bill Walsh Scholarship for 2024

Thrilled to announce that Russell Leung, a student at Northwestern University. has been selected winner of the 2024 editing scholarship named after my brother Bill.

Many thanks to everyone at ACES: The Society for Editing for helping maintain this wonderful tribute to our beloved Billy. Every day is a still a struggle, but things like this do help make the painful reality a little more tolerable. xo

Hardworking young editor wins $3,500 scholarship 

The 2024 Bill Walsh Scholarship for excellence in the editing of news, with a prize of $3,500, is going to Russell Leung of Northwestern University.

Leung has worked in five editing positions, including print managing editor, of The Daily Northwestern, an online and in-print news source for the university and its northern Illinois community. Emphasizing clarity and accuracy, he edited a wide range of subject matter, wrote headlines, coordinated news coverage and led other editors. He was also a managing editor for Northwestern’s Asian-interest magazine.

Last summer, Leung worked at The Seattle Times, where he edited, titled and posted articles, newsletters, news alerts, graphics, data visualizations, social media posts, maps and captions. In the coming summer he is to do similar work for the Boston Globe.

Leung is on track to graduate in June with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism, a double major in environmental sciences and a minor in Spanish.  

“I'm extraordinarily appreciative of the ACES Education Fund and the Walsh family for this honor,” Leung said. “The scholarship will help me continue to pursue a career in the consistently underappreciated yet all-important field of news editing.

”Leung is the eighth winner of the Bill Walsh Scholarship, named for the late author of three books and an editor of news at The Washington Post. The award is administered by the Education Fund of ACES: The Society for Editing and is endowed by the Walsh family, ACES members and other contributors. Bill Walsh was a member of the Education Fund board. 

The scholarship is awarded annually, along with other ACES scholarships.  Application deadline is Nov. 15.  For details, click HERE.
