Tim Riggins' Latest Superhero Role: Fighting AIDS!

Lainey Gossip has a cache of photos of Taylor Kitsch on the set of "The Normal Heart," the long-overdue film adaptation of Larry Kramer's groundbreaking play about the early days of AIDS. Kitsch plays Bruce Niles, a co-founder and early president of the Gay Men's Health Crisis alongside Ned, who is based on Kramer himself. 

Bruce Niles was based on Paul Popham, a decorated Vietnam veteran turned corporate go-getter who died of AIDS in 1987. Sadly, Kitsch's interpretation of the role does not include Niles' trademark mustache, which upped Lee Pace's sex appeal incredibly during the show's 2011 Broadway revival! Ryan Murphy is at the helm of this one, so here's hoping he doesn't fuck it up like every other adaptation he's ever touched.

'Friday Night' Alums, or 'From Dillon to Eternity'

   I was just telling a friend how surprising -- but completely correct -- it was that Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton seem to be having the most success post-"Friday Night Lights." While Hollywood logic would dictate that the plethora of hot young newcomers would go on to bigger and better things -- leaving the 40-something "mom and dad" in the dust -- Chandler (always a TV actor) has suddenly found himself an in-demand feature film actor ("Super 8," "Argo" and four pictures in the can), while Britton had a hit with Ryan Murphy's "American Horror Story," before moving to the lead role in "Nashville." (IMDB also lists a slew of upcoming projects for her, including on the big screen.) Taylor Kitsch, the ridiculously sexy Tim Riggins, was Hollywood's obvious pick for the next big thing. But after a string of high-profile disasters -- "John Carter," "Battleship" and "Savages" -- it will be interesting to see if he gets a second fifth chance. Adrianne Palicki's "Lone Star" got cancelled after a couple episodes, and her "Wonder Woman" pilot (thankfully) didn't even get picked up at all. (Next up for her is the big-screen "Red Dawn," about a group of teenagers look to save their town from an invasion of North Korean soldiers, which looks horrendous.) Minka Kelly's "Charlie's Angels' got cancelled after a couple of episodes, as did Zach Gilford's "Off the Map." (I'm not sure if his new show, "The Mob Doctor," is fairing any better.) I have, however, seen that the great Landry (Jesse Plemons)  has a recurring role on "Breaking Bad." And I also saw him in P.T. Anderson's "The Master." And now it's come to my attention that hunky Matt Lauria (above) -- aka Luke Cafferty -- has a recurring role on "Parenthood," a show I gave up on because I was convinced it was going to be cancelled. (Apparently Lauria also played a himbo on an episode of "30 Rock." ) It looks like the "Parenthood" producers are using him wisely as well -- in underwear scenes in the ocean -- while the grown-ups get the real acting jobs! 

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose?

Dear Lord: please let there be another "Friday Night Lights" movie. With the former Tim Riggins now starring in two of the biggest box-office disasters in recent memory, a big-screen version of the cult TV show may be the only way Taylor Kitsch works again.

"Friday Night Lights" alum Taylor Kitsch stopped by the Apple store in Soho to discuss his new film, "The Bang Bang Club." Based on the true-life experiences of four combat photographers capturing the final days of apartheid in South Africa. the movie screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, and director Steven Silver and author Greg Marinovich were also on hand.

Shitty-Shitty 'Bang Bang'?

In theory, a film based on the true-life experiences of four combat photographers capturing the final days of apartheid in South Africa sounds like a winner. But throw Ryan Phillippe -- the Rob Lowe of his generation -- into the mix, doing an accent, and suddenly things aren't looking so good. Nonetheless, with (a half-naked) Taylor Kitsch in his first "big" movie role, I'll probably end up seeing "The Bang Bang Club" anyway. Check out the trailer -- who knew photo journalists were so randy?

 

'Friday Night Lights' Shine On

Longtime reader may be wondering why I haven't mentioned "Friday Night Lights" for over a year now when it was all I could talk about when it first came on the air. After "bumping" into Taylor Kitsch and Scott Porter while they were filming a scene for Season 3 back in January '09, I sort of decided to pull away from the show when I found out first-run episodes were going to be airing on DIRECTV, with NBC getting them later. (This was the cost-saving plan the Peacock network came up with to keep the highly loved but lowly rated show on the air.) The writing appeared to be on the wall, so I decided to preemptively dump the show before the network did it first. But here we are more than a year later, and yet another season has aired on DIRECTV, and now they're running on NBC. Immediately feeling left out, I got Disc 1 of Season 3 through Netflix and got through it last week -- and Disc 2 arrived today. The show didn't miss a beat moving to DIRECTV it turns out, and now I kicking myself each week as a new episode airs and I'm forced to wait to watch it later on (on DVD in a year, perhaps?). I haven't gotten to the episode where Tim Riggins and Jason Street are shopping at a cheap-suit shop outside The New York Times building yet (I'm hoping by walk-by made it into the scene), but with the news this week that ABC Family has picked up reruns of "the first FIVE seasons of the show," that means we're guaranteed to at least one more new season. NBC says it will be the final installment, but since I haven't seen most of the third, none of the fourth and the fifth hasn't been shot yet, all of that alone guarantees the show will be around longer than most new shows I fall in love with (I'm talking about you, "Sons and Daughters," "The Comeback" and "Kath and Kim").

The latest MetroSource NY cover story profiles celebrity photographer John Russo as he prepares for the release of his new book, "About Face," a collection of striking black-and-white Polaroids of some of the most ridiculously handsome men around. Russo describes the photos as "raw," as in no retouching ("What you see is what you get"), and says he elected to shoot the men from the shoulders up because he wanted it to be all about their faces. "There are so many naked boy books out there," he explained. But, "there's nothing better than looking at a beautiful face. And I'm obsessed with people's eyes." His subjects include everyone from established Hollywood actors, models and athletes to up-and-comers and regular guys on the street (and by "regular" he means EXTREMELY hot.).
