Tennis Tuesday

Oh, Frances! Honestly not sure if he is really a new Calvin Klein underwear model or if these were posted in response to Carlos Alcaraz's revealing spread. But whatever the case may be, they elicited some of the best comments the internet has ever seen, which you can view BELOW.

Frances Tiafoe Tests Positive for Coronavirus

More bad news from the world of tennis. Frances Tiafoe says he’s tested positive for the virus that causes Covid-19, making him at least the fifth highly ranked player to contract it. (Major League Baseball has also been hit hard, with 31 players tested positive.) The hunky American was in Atlanta for the All-American Team Cup — the exhibition John Isner has been aggressively defending. Tiafoe beat Sam Querrey on Friday despite feeling under the weather. While I applaud his getting tested and withdrawing from the event, it’s unclear why he was playing in the first place given that he said after yesterday’s match that he hadn’t “been feeling the best the last couple of days.” Also not sure what if anything was done to ensure the health of Sam, who returned today and defeated Tommy Paul. (God help the organizers if so much as one hair on Tommy’s head gets infected with this potentially life-threatening virus.) Here’s hoping the USTA does a better job when play begins in Flushing Meadow next month.

Get well soon, Frances.

Meanwhile, Tommy’s quaranbuddy, Reilly Opelka, withdrew with a knee injury. The only good thing about this is that it allowed LOCAL HUNK Kevin King to fill in as an alternate, looking dreamy as he got blown off the court by John "Coronabro" Isner.

Weekend Tennis Roundup

Hard to write a comprehensive tennis roundup when we are midway through the first major of the year. But suffice to say it's been an exciting week, with Frances Tiafoe and Stefanos Tsitsipas finally delivering on some Next Gen promise with their wins over Grigor Dmitirov and Roger Federer, respectively. How I'd love to see one of them win it all.

And while Serena Williams is looking unstoppable -- as with the Big Three, when is it enough? -- I won't exactly be disappointed if she ends up tying Margaret Court's apples-to-oranges record on the stadium that bears the homophobe's name.

UPDATE: All credit to Simona Halep for coming back from a disastrous first set to give Serena a real run for her money. The GOAT was too good to overcome, but I have a newfound respect for the Romanian pipsqueak’s game -- and box.

Wasn't happy about Danielle Collins's win over Angie Kerber. The two-two NCAA champ, who reminds me of a millennial Bonnie Gadusek -- may play in a diaper. But it’s hard to argue with what’s in her box ...

Dutch Treat: With hitting partner Stijn de Gier

Milos Raonic made Alexander Zrerev look like a "major" fool again. But as I said before, any chance to see what's in the Balkan Canadian's box is fine with me.

The Croatia-Serbia battle between Borna Coric and Filip Krajinovic was a sight to behold. Glad Borna pulled it out. Next up is Luca Pouille in what promises to be the Battle of the Bubble Butts.

And ... did you see Ash Barty edge out Maria Sharapova?

How many legends can you name?

UPDATE 2:

Pouille came from a set down to beat Coric. Starting to think the Croat might not have what it takes to go to the next level. Weird how many players have problematic forehands these days, from Borna and Benoit to the hitches on Tiafoe, Khachanov and even Medvedev.

Bubbling Under

The Big Three -- or Four -- are fantastic. But how great would it be for men's tennis if one of these guys won the first major of the year?

Borna on ice ...

Russian interference ...

He is Frances, hear him roar!

I was rooting for Stan Wawrinka against Milos Raonic but would still be happy for the Canadian to win it all if it means we get to see more of his box.

Tennis Tuesday

Serena Williams, Katie Boulter, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Roger Federer

Everyone cleaned up nicely for this year's Hopman Cup, which features Germany, Switzerland, U.S., Greece, Australia, France, Spain and Great Britain ...

Roger and Belinda

Frances and Serena

Ashleigh Barty, Matthew Ebden, Garbine Muguruza, David Ferrer, Alize Cornet, Lucas Pouille, Angelique Kerber, Alexander Zverev, Belinda Bencic, Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Frances Tiafoe, Maria Sakkari, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Katie Boulter and Cameron Norrie

UPDATE:

Roger Federer and Serena Williams shared a court for the first time, with the male GOAT teaming with Belinda Bencic to defeat the female GOAT and Frances Tiafoe in the Hopman Cup mixed doubles. "This was super cool that we got to do it at such a pinnacle point in both our careers...the guy is great, he’s the greatest of all time to be honest, both on the court and off the court," said Serena after the match, revealing that a Word-a-Day calendar might be a good Christmas present for her next December.

Tiafoe, Verdasco and Thiem Work Up a Sweat in Cincy

Looks like practice didn't make perfect for Tiafoe and Verdasco, who were both knocked out in the first round.
