Chelsea Handler's Plans for World Domination Continue

The teaser for the not-quite-on-the-sked-yet sitcom based on Chelsea Handler's HUGE second memoir, "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," has hit the Internet. There's so much to process, where to begin? Laura Preppon -- who is just five years younger than Handler -- is playing the fictional Chelsea -- Chelsea Hanson -- in her younger, "wilder" days. Handler is playing her own older, born-again sister Sloane (didn't know she was going to be on at all, but should have figured). And "Chelsea Lately" round-table regular Jo Koy appears as one of Chelsea's coworkers, which makes sense given that Chelsea needs a punching bag. I also see that Dot Jones -- Coach Beiste from "Glee" -- even pops up in a most predictable way! It's hard to tell if the characters have any real chemistry -- that's what makes "Chelsea Lately" such a treat -- but I'd give it a shot. Chelsea and I have many things in common, right down to our unfortunate sexual encounters with red heads that scarred us for life.

Chelsea Handler and the Down-Low Boyfriend Connection

This photo should quell any gay rumors

I keep hearing Chelsea Handler tease her pal Whitney Cummings about the raven-haired comedian's "new black boyfriend." It seems Chelsea brought Whitney to a taping of "Dancing With the Stars" (Chelsea was only there to support pal Leah Remini), and this giant football player was seated next to them. When Cummings got up to go the bathroom, Chelsea says she asked the jock if he wanted her pal's number and he said yes. (The two have been an item ever since, as evidenced by Cummings' extreme discomfort when asked about the union on last night's "Chelsea Lately.")

What Chelsea -- and Whitney -- have not mentioned, however, is that Whitney's new lover is none other than "free agent" Kerry Rhodes, who was recently outed by former assistant slash lover Russell "Hollywood" Jackson. Hollywood released dozens of incriminating photos of him and his man, and then went so far as to acknowledge that he was the bottom in the relationship because he "didn't want to do all that damn work." (What a surprise.) While I'm not saying Rhodes' relationship with Whitney is a sham -- let's not forget the "B" in LGBT -- she might want to be extra careful before this situation turns into a Down Low Dirty Shame.

Funny Girl Lady

I've always loved Chelsea Handler on that low-budget "Candid Camera"-type show "Girls Behaving Badly,"on Oxygen, but it wasn't until I started watching her new E! show, "Chelsea Lately," that I realized she's gotta be the most hilarious person in Hollywood these days. She's as funny as Kathy Griffin and as gorgeous as Jenny McCarthy (and Chelsea doesn't make those f**king faces) -- kind of the best of both worlds. (I'm sorry. Kath is my girl but if I have to look at those fried bangs for another year I'm might have to enroll at the Vidal Sassoon Academy over on Fifth Avenue so I can stage an intervention.) Chelsea's nightly show starts with a roundtable discussion of all things pop culture with an ever-changing group of comedians and D-listers. This is followed by a sitdown celebrity interview and then my favorite part of the show -- location spots where Chelsea gets herself into a variety of uncomfortably embarrassing situations, like the time she took a hip-hop dance class and accused her "urban" classsmates of stealing her wallet from her bag, or the time she gave a commencement speech at a 2-week bartenders course. (If you couldn't watch "Ellen" or "The Comeback," this show is not for you!!!)

Chelsea's MySpace is chock full o' hilariousness and can be viewed here.
She's also the author of "My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands" and the upcoming "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea"

At the risk of turning into the 21st century version of Sean Young when she was lobbying for the role of Catwoman in "Batman," let's just say I'm willing to do just about anything to meet Chelsea and pull up a chair on her roundtable one of these nights!

Book Shelf: Michael Ian Black, Two Girls From Jersey, Plus Survival of the Kiddest

My memoir summer ended on a high note, with one of the best I've read yet. Keep reading for details ...

I got Michael Ian Black's "You're Not Doing It Right" on a bit of a whim. I had read about it briefly in the New York Times, then Michael saw me looking at in Barnes and Noble on Fifth Avenue and bought it for me as a surprise. I mainly know Black from his VH1 punditry -- plus I've watched most of "The State" since discovering that Joe Lo Truglio is my cousin -- and though I didn't know what to expect, I imagined it would be delivered in the same dry wit that has made him famous. Boy was I wrong. It turns out the book is far more serious than funny, or even sarcastic: His parents divorced when he was young and his mom became a lesbian; shortly thereafter, his dad suddenly died; he gets the girl of his dreams, but never really saw himself getting married or having kids, yet he finds himself a husband and father (of two). Even though these issues are mostly serious business, I expected him to find the humor in them. Yet for most of the book he plays it surprisingly straight. He barely mentions his career at all, other than to say his "disappearing" to work is a source of tension at home. But just when I was l losing patience -- page after page of marriage drama, colicky babies, and sleepless nights, all the stuff I have gone out of my way to avoid in my own life, so why would I even want to read about it? -- he managed to tie it all together rather nicely in the end. Part of me thinks I might have enjoyed it more if I had read it with fewer expectations, but then I remembered I didn't have any to begin with. Don't know what else to say -- it's a strange book from a strange guy. Buy HERE.

Had a lot more fun with "But Enough About Me," a memoir by Jancee Dunn. In it, the former Rolling Stone writer, MTV2 host and "Good Morning America" correspondent -- who I had never heard of until a friend recommended this to me -- alternates stories of growing up in suburban New Jersey in the '80s with celebrity encounters and "recommendations" on dealing with superstar musicians and actors. The back-and -forth works -- one minute the coolest girl in school is inviting her to go to the Cyndi Lauper concert (oh-my-god!), and then the next she's in the reception area of Maverick Records about to interview you-know-who. I'm guessing she sold the book more on her A-list stories about Bruce Springsteen, Brad Pitt and Madonna than her childhood memories, yet surprisingly it was the tales of an overzealous JC Penney manager father and traditional mom that I found most endearing. (Translation: I could have gone for a full-on memoir minus the bold-faced names.) Buy HERE. (Next up for Dunn? She is the co-author of Cyndi Lauper's memoir!)

I've had Chelsea Handler's behemoth bestseller, "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," on my nightstand for years, yet consistently found something I'd rather read more. I finally buckled down, though, and decided to find out how this thing could have sold a million copies. It turned out not to be so easy. The first story has a great premise -- she lies to her classmates that she's been cast to play Goldie Hawn's daughter in the sequel to "Private Benjamin" -- but the writing was so sophomoric and the jokes so obvious. By the time I was halfway through, I was almost ready to throw in the towel. But then I was watching "Chelsea Lately," a show many of you know I love, and I realized I was doing it wrong. She isn't the female David Sedaris -- she's Chelsea Handler. I then read the second half of the book in her unique "voice" -- imagining the eyes rolls and exaggerating pronunciation of keys words -- and the whole thing started being far more enjoyable. The story about the guest nugget from "Girls Behaving Badly" was particularly good, which I later learned was going to be an entire book on its own at one point. (Probably before what happened happened.) I won't be reading Chelsea's other books -- I realized she's much more fun to watch than trying to act our her shtick while reading -- but I do acknowledge that you can't argue with this kind of success. Buy HERE.

My final memoir was "The Kids Are All Right," a two-person point of view story (or four, depending on your point of view) about an upper-middle-class family in Bedford, New York, whose dashing father and soap-opera actress mom both died within a couple years of each other, causing their four children to each end up in separate new living arrangements. The book is primarily written by youngest child Diana (who winds up with a bit of a kook new "mom"), and second-oldest Liz (a kindhearted traveler) -- both of whom are journalists now -- but it includes extensive interviews/chapters with oldest sister Amanda and brother Dan, to create a fascinating perspective of how four different people lived through and then recall the same events. That Amanda is a New Wave music freak who spent the 1980s sneaking into clubs in the city for concerts, and that Liz is a blond beauty who was considered for the role of Mariel Hemingway's younger sister in "Star 80" only ups the Kenneth quotient of this one -- a moving piece of work about family bonds that will wipe the self-centered look off every only child in the world. 'Chelsea' Showrunner Exits After Just Three Weeks

I adore Chelsea Handler, so would probably watch whatever she came up with. But here's hoping news that the guy who runs her new Netflix talk show has left after nine episodes will mean that the show will change moving forward. I know she was hoping to make this one more educational. But the best part of "Chelsea Lately" was always the round table -- where she could interact and react to people, her bread and butter -- so 30 minutes with no commercials is a lot of time to fill up trying to make kooky celebrities seem interesting (sorry, Gwen Stefani) and cabinet members seem entertaining. Perhaps she should do what she did on the episode with Chris Evans where she films a group of people at a dinner table discussing a given topic. I couldn't care less about super heroes, but this give-and-take format allowed her to shine, so it didn't even matter. This is what she did on most of her "Chelsea Does ..." specials, and it might be the way to go with "Chelsea" moving forward. Doing the first streaming talk show was always going to be a trial-and-error effort, so there's no shame in shifting gears. Here's hoping things start moving in a funnier direction.

Now if Chelsea could just get him to TAKE HIS PANTS OFF again ...

UPDATE: Chelsea addresses the reports.

I'm a Chelsea Boy

Kudos to the smart people over at E! for renewing Chelsea Handler's hilarious late-night talk/gossip show, "Chelsea Lately." (Chelsea's live-in lover, Ted Harbert, is the CEO of Comcast Entertainment Group, which includes the E! channel, so imagine how awkward that dinner conversation would have been had the show been axed.)

If you're not watching then you're really missing a treat. (Such an antidote for the crap that passes as "late night" fare on the networks.) The show debuted on July 16 and E! reports that its audience has grown by 23 percent since the summer launch, so word-of-mouth is obviously helping. Although "Chelsea Lately" has sort of been in production throughout the writers strike (even the repeats generally have a new "round table" tacked on to the beginning, in which Chelsea dishes the latest celebrity headlines with guest comics, actors and pop culture gurus), the news release says "new" episodes for Season 2 will begin airing on Monday at 11:30 p.m. I can't think of a better way to start a new year than laughing my ass off. Congrats, Chelsea!

Tweet for Twat: Perez Hilton Rips Chelsea Handler's VMA Performance

It looks like Perez Hilton is engaged in an almost embarrassingly one-sided "Twitter war" with Chelsea Handler, after ripping her performance as host of last night's MTV Video Music Awards. (Did he remove a tweet that used the word "bomb"?) Although a lot of people thought this might be the perfect venue for Chelsea's bawdy brand of humor, hardcore fans know that stand-up really isn't her strongest suit -- it's the roundtable where she excels, reacting off of the news of the day and other people's observations about it, where you have to get to know the cast of regulars to really be in on the jokes -- so I thought she did about as well as I expected. (The show was the highest-rated since 2002, by the way, and I never think the hosts of these kind of three-ring circus events "make" or "break" its outcome anyway.) That Perez has decided to call her out on "sucking" so bad -- and calling her out again ... and again -- has me wondering if he'll be back on "Chelsea Lately" anytime soon. Her contempt for Perez has been noticeable during past appearances, but back then you got the sense that she felt she almost needed him more than he needed her. With three HUGE books and a string of A-listers now stopping by the show, something tells me she's not feeling that way anymore. And if she's looking for a gay gossip blogger to fill his spot, she needn't look any further!

Chelsea Handler's Talk Show to End Aug. 26

Well, everyone thought Chelsea Handler was complaining about E! and saying she was ending her talk show soon as a contract-negotiation ploy. Wrong. The network announced that "Chelsea Lately" will officially end Tuesday, Aug. 26. Chelsea had this to say about her experience on the network that brought us the Kardashians:
I myself am more surprised than anyone that I was able to hold down a job for seven years, and it was a fantastic seven years. I will always look back at my time on E! as most people look back at their time in college. I'm glad I went.
I'm sure we haven't heard the last of her, but I fear her funniest days are behind her.

Fun Couple: Chelsea Handler and Maria Sharapova

I think Maria's tennis career is toast, so what better way to spend your retirement than hanging out on a beach in Mexico with Chelsea Handler? The two became friendly after the screamer appeared on "Chelsea Lately," and now I hear a "Chelsea Does ... Russia" is also in the works -- which should be interesting given that she has publicly stated her disdain for all of them. In her defense, Maria's only a Russian when it comes to doping :-)

The Twinkie Defense

The new Instinct arrived yesterday and the cover is a bit of a dud. (Sorry, but I'm no Chris Isherwood.) In coverboy Tyler Williams' defense, he looks way better in the pics inside the book. The magazine is chock full of fun reviews of books, music and movies, and lots of fashion spreads. But the highlight is the Soapbox essay in the back by my girl Chelsea Handler. In it, the hilarious star of "Chelsea Lately" explains why she has a big gay following, and it's not just because "there is a really strong chance that" she "has a penis." Pick up a copy and read her moving words to the gay community about the importance of laughter.

Chelsea Handler's Netflix Talk Show to Premiere May 11

My nights got a lot freer when I didn't follow Stephen Colbert to CBS and I abandoned "The Daily Show" when Jon Stewart called it a day. But I am planning to check out Chelsea Handler's new talk show on Netflix, which she just announced will be debuting May 11. The as-yet-untitled show will roll out in 30-minute increments, three days a week, on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Read Chelsea's announcement here:

Chelsea Handler Covers Marie Claire

Chelsea Handler covers the new issue of Marie Claire (I prefer this inside picture). I was an early proponent of "Chelsea Lately," but have become less disciplined about watching it lately -- not because of the show, but because I've been trying to read more. The magazine's interview doesn't make a whole lot of sense -- she and Ted Harbert broke up because he would want to watch her show? She's not very ambitious, yet she had 23 shows on the air last season? -- but OK. You can check it out HERE.

What I've never been able to figure out is why she let THIS SLAB OF BEEF go?

Glamour Girls

Not sure if Debbie Harry's stylist saw my post from last week's Cosmo awards -- where the Blondie singer was named Ultimate Icon -- but there was a definite improvement at Glamour's Women of the Year awards last night in Manhattan. (I'm guessing "Fang" was happy to have the night off.) And thank god for that. This event was far more A-list, with everyone from Emma Stone, Chelsea Handler and Jennifer Lopez, to Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush and Anita Hill in attendance. Have a look:

Make Me Laugh

Panty raid: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Tina Fey

Looks like it's time to renew my subscription to Vanity Fair. The new issue pays tribute to some of our favorite funny ladies by dressing them up for photos depicting them as the tabloid-fodder "stars" of today. Annie Leibovitz snapped the fun shot of Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for VF's cover story (see inset, below) on their trade.
This inside shot features five of my faves -- (left to right) Sandra Bernhard (as Jessica Simpson???), Chelsea Handler (Britney Spears), Jenna Fischer (Lindsay Lohan), Sarah Silverman (Amy Winehouse) and Wanda Sykes (Naomi Campbell).

Others included in the spread include Leslie Mann, Susie Essman and Amy Sedaris. Hollywood has come a long way since Lucille Ball, but as Vanity Fair says, how this evolution happened is not entirely clear. The backlash school of feminism would argue that it’s the tyranny of a looks-obsessed culture that promotes sex appeal over talent, be it in comedy, pop music, or even sports. Joan Rivers blames the entertainment industry and the men who still control it. "Oh, please," she says. "Nowadays, you can’t even get on open mike with less than a C cup." Lucky for us, Chelsea Handler more than fills that bra -- and is hilarious. (VanityFair)
