Meet GQ's Men of the Year

   Got GQ's Men of the Year 2013 issue over the weekend on my iPad. The Justin Timberlake cover story was particularly revealing. The writer happened to catch the Golden Boy at a moment when his latest movie ("Runner Runner") opened and bombed at the box office, and his "20/20 Experience Part 2" failed to delight critics as its predecessor had, and it sounded like JT was (impossibly) facing criticism for the first time ... at age 32. Not Entirely Buying 'Dallas Buyers Club'

Saw "Dallas Buyers Club" over the weekend. Liked it, but didn't love it. I learned a lot -- had no idea that these so-called clubs were how activists got certain unapproved drugs and remedies to AIDS patients in the early days when they realized AZT was doing more harm than good -- but movies with unsympathetic leads are always a tough sell. Despite being told he had just 30 days to live, Matthew McConaughey's homophobic hick character was so distasteful in every way that I really didn't feel too much for him until about 75 minutes into the film -- when he finally lets his guard down -- but by then the closing credits were getting ready to roll. I thought Jared Leto seemed a lot more awkward than I had been led to believe, but nice work by Jennifer Garner, who played a doctor sympathetic to the guys' cause. Curious if others saw it and what they thought.

Matthew McConaughey Covers Details

He's been a sex symbol for decades, but with the exception of "Boys on the Side," Matthew McConaughey has never really done anything for me. He doesn't do much for me as a leading man either, but I have to say his recent foray into supporting roles has been a pleasant surprise -- most recently in "The Paper Boy" and "Magic Mike." I'd like to see him continue down this path, a la Kevin Bacon. Perhaps it's not a coincidence that  it was a supporting part in "Dazed and Confused" that got him noticed in the first place.

 Did a double take when I saw Matthew McConaughey in yesterday's Daily News because he looked so much like my friend Walter, who died of AIDS in the mid-'90s. Turns out Hollywood's biggest hater of shirts lost 30 pounds to play a man with the disease -- Ron Woodroof, an electrician who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986 but ends up extending his life with a series of alternative medicines that he smuggled into the U.S. from Mexico --- in the new film "The Dallas Buyer's Club." Sadly, my friend was unable to hang on until the protease inhibitors were introduced, although his sharp tongue and even sharper mind live on in all who knew him. Read HERE.
