Weekend Tennis Roundup

The year ended on an incredibly high note for Italy, with the men and women taking home the Davis and Billie Jean King cups, respectively. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.

Jannik Sinner rounded out his stunning year in a typically cool and collected fashion on Sunday in Malaga. The No. 1 player in the world defeated Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(2), 6-2 to seal a second consecutive Davis Cup title for Italy. After Matteo Berrettini earlier defeated Botic van de Zandschulp, Sinner’s win completed a 2-0 triumph for his country against the Netherlands and capped another year in which Italian tennis has enjoyed considerable success across the board. “It has been an amazing year. I’m very proud of the whole team,” said Sinner. “There is a lot of work behind it and I’m very happy to hold this trophy again. It was a very difficult day today, because anything can happen.”

And the Italian women won their fifth Billie Jean King Cup (aka Fed Cup) title, and first since 2013, by toppling 2002 champions Slovakia 2-0 (4-0 in sets) in Wednesday's championship tie in Malaga. "It’s really a dream come true," Italian captain Tathiana Garbin said on court. "I have such great champions, great players, but mostly, great human beings. I’m so proud of them, they fight every day."

Namesake congratulations!
