Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek cleaned up in Indian Wells, while Matteo Berrettini made a "big" splash at the Challenger in Phoenix. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.
Carlos Alcaraz surged past World No. 4 Daniil Medvedev 7-6(5), 6-1 on Sunday to retain the BNP Paribas Open title. It is the 20-year-old's first title since he triumphed at Wimbledon last year.
Iga Swiatek rolled to her second BNP Paribas Open title on Sunday by toppling Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-0. World No.1 Swiatek won the final eight games of the match to knock off Sakkari for the second time in two years in Indian Wells, having beaten her 6-4, 6-1 in the 2022 final.
Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektić defeated Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in the final, 7–6(7–2), 7–6(7–4) to win the men's doubles title. It was the fourth ATP Masters 1000 doubles title for both players.
Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens defeated the defending champion Kateřina Siniaková and her partner Storm Hunter in the final, 6–3, 6–4 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2024 Indian Wells Masters. With the victory, Hsieh reclaimed the WTA No. 1 doubles ranking from Mertens.
Matt Ebden and Storm Hunter won the inaugural Mixed Doubles Invitational at the BNP Paribas Open -- and the Aussies hope the idea catches on. Currently on the tennis tour, mixed doubles has limited space on the calendar -- at the Grand Slams, the Olympics and the United Cup. But Indian Wells staged the mixed event in the second week, offering a total of $150,000 in prize money for eight teams.
Luca Nardi scored the biggest upset in the desert, defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over the 24-time Grand Slam champion, converting match point with an ace.
The 20-year-old, who was a lucky loser, became the lowest-ranked player to beat Djokovic in a Grand Slam or ATP Masters 1000 level event
Although he lost to Tommy Paul in the round of 16, it was a tournament he will never forget
And on top of being adorable, Nardi jumped from No. 123 in the world to 96
Portugal’s Nuno Borges successfully defended his Arizona Tennis Classic title Sunday when he defeated former World No. 6 Matteo Berrettini 7-5, 7-6(4) in the championship match.
While he came up short in the final, it was a promising return to the pro ranks for the 27-year-old Italian, who hadn't competed since the U.S. Open
