All's Forgiven

Misophonia kept me from going to the theater to catch a rare film I actually wanted to see. But Damian and I found a home-screening of "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" -- based on the memoir of famed celebrity forger Lee Israel -- to be well worth the wait. Melissa McCarthy, who normally makes movies I would never see even in the quiet of my own home, was spectacular as the aggressively unpleasant failed writer who turns to fraud to avoid homelessness, Richard E. Grant was equally good as her eventual partner in crime, while Dolly Wells -- of HBO's ill-fated "Doll and Em" -- and Jane Curtin deliver nice supporting performances. Though a film about a female writer set in the early 1990s New York City literary world was an encouraging sign that I would enjoy it, that "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" was largely set in my local watering hole (Julius') and has a Larry-lookalike cat co-star quickly bumped into instant classic status. I highly recommend!
