Song of the Day: 'Charity Ball' by Fanny
Like most people, I've barely heard of Fanny, who before the Go-Go's and the Bangles were the first all-female band to release an album on a major label. (Come to think of it, the Go-Go's never did.) I think I first heard of Fanny when a friend researching a book on women rockers referenced them, then one of Suzi Quatro's bitter sisters who was briefly in the band mentioned them in the 2019 documentary "Suzi Q." That Fanny had two Top 40 hits -- today's SOTD and "Butter Boy" -- I'd never so much as heard of stunned me, as I spent the early 1980s scouring record stores for female artists. (They also toured with Slade, Jethro Tull, Humble Pie, the Kinks and Chicago -- and backed Barbra Streisand in the studio and performed on “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour” and “American Bandstand.”) But soon a lot more people will know about the pop pioneers -- two of whom were gay -- thanks to an upcoming documentary called “Fanny: The Right to Rock.” The film recently opened in select cities and will be released via video-on-demand Aug. 2 -- and air on PBS in 2023. Read what the Gray Lady has to say about it HERE.
