Hollywood Heartthrob Tab Hunter Is Dead at 86

Was sad to wake to the news that Tab Hunter -- once the most famous and most beautiful man on the planet -- has died just a few days shy of his 87th birthday. Many a gay boy of a certain age first really learned of him as Divine's love interest in the John Waters camp classic "Polyester" -- Blondie's Debbie Harry (above with Tab) and Chris Stein worked on the soundtrack -- but it was Jeffrey Schwarz's gripping documentary about the former teen dream that exposed us to a much deep side of Tab, whose same-sex romances were the stuff of Hollywood fairy tales. RIP.

Tab Hunter Exposed

I want to give Tab Hunter a "voice lesson" too! 

We finally got around to watching Jeffrey Schwarz's "Tab Hunter Confidential" and really enjoyed it. I had heard that the former heartthrob was reticent about discussing his private life, but the reports were grossly exaggerated. Tab was very forthcoming about his long-term relationships with figure skater Ronnie Robertson and actor Anthony Perkins -- and we even get to meet his current partner of 30 years, film producer Allan Glaser. I think what struck me the most about this documentary is the realization that Hunter was truly one of the biggest stars on the planet at one point -- Jack Warner literally created Warner Brothers records to capitalize on Tab's fame and desire to sing -- and then just as quickly was all but forgotten. It's also a fascinating look at life in the closet in Hollywood at a time when there were no other options.

Song of the Day: 'Polyester' (Theme Song) by Tab Hunter

Dreamy little number, very obviously written by Chris Stein and Debbie Harry. It would have been nice if Deb had done a demo for this instead of just backing vocals.
