I miss the good ole days -- when dames were dames and gays were closet cases. (Oh, wait.)

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

People magazine has a sweet interview with Rock Hudson's "true love" -- Lee Garlington, a former movie extra who dated the actor from 1962 to 1965 -- who explains how they kept their relationship a secret:

"I was scared to death," Garlington says of their first meeting at Hudson's mansion on Beverly Crest Drive in Beverly Hills. "Of course, he was 6-foot-4, a monster. He offered me a beer, but nothing happened. Literally. I was too scared. He said, 'Well, let's get together,' and we did." 

"I'd come over after work, spend the night and leave the next morning," Garlington says. "I'd sneak out at 6 a.m. in my Chevy Nova and coast down the street without turning on the engine so the neighbors wouldn't hear. We thought we were being so clever." 

The two went to move premieres together, but each brought a female date.

Tired Old Queen at the Movies: All That Heaven Allows' (1955)

Steve Hayes reviews Doug Sirk's "All That Heaven Allows" and Todd Haynes' "Far From Heaven," which was inspired by Sirk's 1955 film about a May-December romance between Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson.

Footnote: You probably heard recently that a Broadway musical adaptation of "Far From Heaven" was in the works. (God, why?) It's been a long time since I saw the film, but I really remember being underwhelmed by it at the time, despite the fact that on paper it's exactly the kind of thing I would love. Perhaps it's time to revisit it.
