'Looking' Back

With "Looking" being released Nov. 15 in a special Blu-ray and DVD set containing the entire series and the movie, Boy Culture chatted with Michael Lannan, the guy who created "the show that took on HIV panic, infidelity, racism and classism in the LGBT community and, well, rimming." Read HERE.

'Looking' Back

Loved pretty much everything about HBO's "Looking" movie. (Seeing Kevin's point of view on the Patrick fiasco was pure genius, and I appreciate that they ended it with another ellipsis.) But nothing was better than Doris's quote, below.

Cast of 'Looking' Looks Back

Broadway World caught up with the cast of HBO's "Looking: The Movie" at world premiere at the Castro Theatre. Jonathan Groff, who plays the lovelorn Patrick, had this to say about following up an already canceled series: "It was very meta for all of us. Coming back to shoot the movie was like coming back to say goodbye to our characters and San Francisco. But when I read the script, I thought: 'Omigod, that's the perfect ending!'" Read more HERE.

Did you know in real life Lauren Weedman hired a hot (teenage) babysitter and her husband slept with her? Read HERE.

'Looking: The Movie' to Premiere July 23 on HBO

I wanted another season or was happy with the way it (abruptly) ended on an ambiguous note, but I will definitely be tuning in. The description is somewhat unexpected:
Patrick (Jonathan Groff) “returns to San Francisco for the first time in almost a year to celebrate a momentous event with his old friends. In the process, he must face the unresolved relationships he left behind and make difficult choices about what’s important to him.”
The same men behind the series, executive producers Andrew Haigh and Michael Lannan, penned the script, with Haigh also serving as director.

TVLine recalls that HBO canceled "Looking" last year after two low-rated seasons, but network president Michael Lombardo cushioned the blow by immediately commissioning a standalone movie to tie up all the series’ loose ends. “There were some fans that really wanted to find [closure] with the storylines, [and the writers] wanted to wrap up storytelling for the characters,” said the exec, who viewed Looking as a passion project. “I thought the show, creatively, was really doing something that I hadn’t seen on any other show, particularly dealing with gay lives. As a gay man, in particular, I was very proud that there was a show that felt like it was dealing very honestly and openly with gay men and their lives, without putting them into a comedic mode.”

'Looking' Back

Andrew Haigh -- director of the film "Weekend" and one of the driving forces behind HBO's brilliant "Looking" -- had THIS to say to you fickle gays. Always enjoyed seeing Andrew and creator Michael Lannan discuss the making of the show. At least we have the wrap-up movie to look forward to.

'Looking' Like a Mistake

As you know, I was really pissed that all you stupid queens didn't watch HBO canceled "Looking." But now that I've learned this much-ballyhooed wrap-up is going to be a full two hours in length -- not like an hour, as I assumed -- I'm even more annoyed. The beauty of the end of season two was that it left things ambiguous. Patrick and Kevin's new relationship was on the rocks, but they hadn't thrown in the towel yet. (Or had they?) Was Patrick finally "ready" for Richie ? (Or was he just ready for a trim?) If the "Looking" sendoff is going to be this long, why not just have a mini four-episode final season and leave it at that? The show's pacing and point-of-view is built around its being an episodic slice of life -- and I just don't see any way the screenwriters won't succumb to wrapping everything in a bow. It's bad enough we missed this golden opportunity with "Looking," must we ruin it with a god-awful "Sex and the City"-style "Carrie got her happy ending" film?

Canceled, but 'Looking' Forward

Disappointing but no real surprise. The silver lining is that none of those gay bloggers will have to give back the dozens of clicks they got trashing the groundbreaking series.

'Looking' to Apply Pressure

HBO’s ‘Looking’ Has Season Finale, but No Word on Its Future

Last night's sendoff was awfully good. Let's go all "Party of Five" and tweet @HBO to demand another season!

Dear HBO: An Open Letter Why We Need a Third Season of ‘Looking’

Xfinity LGBT’s Jim Halterman recently penned an open letter to HBO about why the ratings-challenged show should be renewed -- and I couldn't agree with him more:
"Looking” is one of the few shows that exists to look forward to, to indulge in and to simply love. And, like many shows in television history, “Looking” falls into that category of shows that are low-rated but highly loved. “My So-Called Life,” “Friday Night Lights,” the recently departed “Parenthood” are all shows that had rabid fan bases but lived as long as they lived because ratings were not the bottom line.
“Looking” doesn’t just settle into focusing on the love lives of their main characters since the friendships between Patrick (Jonathan Groff), Dom (Murray Bartlett), Agustin (Frankie J. Alvarez) and Doris (Lauren Weedman) are as deep, complex and important as anything else on the show. Take episode 207, where Patrick, Dom and Doris head to Modesto for the unexpected funeral of Doris’s father. It would be alarming if Doris had embarked on that journey alone instead of taking Dom and Patrick with her since, like many gay people, family ends up becoming the friends you choose more than the people who share your last name.
Keep reading why Halterman says he, and the public, is not done with "Looking" HERE.

Not sure it was this one, but sure loved the reggae cover of this Bee Gees classic last night on "Looking" -- which was f**king great!

Jonathan Groff: 'I've Always Known I Was Gay'

My pal Wayman Wong did a nice interview with Jonathan Groff for GoldDerby. Groff, who turns 30 later this month, tells Wong he always knew he was gay but didn't come out until he was 23. In the piece, the singer-actor discusses the season finale of "Looking," his return to "Frozen" and "Glee" and his memories growing up of the portrayal of gay men in entertainment:
When I saw "Brokeback Mountain," I was in a closeted relationship and went to go see it with my boyfriend, so that was really intense for the both of us. We left the theater in total horrified silence. And I remember being in high school and seeing "Queer as Folk" playing on the TV in the background at a party and being intrigued, but too embarrassed to go turn up the volume and actually watch it. "Will & Grace" was a big one, too, when I was growing up. And even though I didn't personally relate to Will or Jack, it was just great to watch them every week and not feel so alone. Also, it was such a great show!

'Looking' Elsewhere

What did you think of Richie's ginger Irish Spring replacement?
(Brady is played by Chris Perfetti.)

I liked him. He reminded me of a present-day Danny Roberts, only less attractive.

2015 Calendar Highlights 'Looking' Artist Sessions

The producers of HBO's stellar "Looking" commissioned a handful of artists and photographers to shadow its stars in the run-up to the premiere of season two. The results were on display at parties in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York -- which you can read about HERE -- and are apparently now all pulled together for a great wall calendar that no one has mailed me of a copy yet!

Frankly, I think Murray Bartlett's mustache should have its own calendar
