You know I'm reluctant to listen to anything that was recorded after 1989 in the last few years, so you gotta think the Canadian band Metric must be something really special if I'm giving them a chance. My friend Christopher -- who isn't afraid of anything but Lady Gaga -- turned me on to them and I'm rapidly falling in love. Lead singer Emily Haines reminds me a lot of my rare '90s fave Tanya Donelly (Belly, Throwing Muses, Breeders) with a hint of Rilo Kiley, another Christopher recommendation. So far I've gotten three of their four albums, but the current "big" one, "Fantasies," is the only one I've really dug into. Still, I'm already bummed that I just missed the band's recent New York gig, which I hear was fantastic ("Emily's a freak!" I was assured.)
I'm hoping my admitting to liking this "current" music it will absolve me of guilt over my new-found obsession with the Trash Can Sinatras ...
