I wasn't familiar with the book "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints," but the presence of Channing Tatum certainly caught my eye in the movie poster down in the subway station. The film won some awards at Sundance and this write-up by Jason Buchanan in All Movie Guide sounds promising:


The harsh realities of life on the street merge with the universal themes of youthful pain and exhilaration in director Dito Montiel's telling tale of one boy's struggle to escape the grim fate that awaits his aimless, trouble-minded peers. For most of Montiel's friends, the only means of escaping their bleak surroundings were drugs, prison, or death.

In breaking the cycle and making a name for himself as a filmmaker, Montiel showed that there are ways to overcome the urban malaise that consumed the majority of his friends. He couldn't have done it alone, though, and with this film Montiel pays tribute to those he left behind by bringing their story to the screen so that their struggles may give others in similar situations the courage to pursue a more positive, creative means of overcoming their anger.

Even Channing Tatum's Pornstache Can't Save 'The Son of No One'

The word out of Sundance -- nearly two years ago -- was that Channing Tatum's cop drama, "The Son of No One," was a dud. But the thought of two hours of a mustachioed Channing (well, as much as he can grow!) in a tight police uniform proved too irresistible for me, so Michael and I caught a matinee over the weekend in the East Village. Boy were the people at Sundance right. This picture is the textbook definition of something that probably sounded good on paper -- an all-star cast (including Al Pacino, Ray Liotta, Katie Holmes, Tracy Morgan and Juliette Binoche), and an intriguing story (about a young cop is assigned to a precinct back in his childhood working-class neighborhood where an old secret threatens to destroy his life and his family) -- that went horribly wrong once the cameras starting rolling.

I guess there were some early signs -- it had a modest $15 million budget with the author of the book on which it's based also directing ("A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints" and "Fighting" are Dito Montiel's only other credits -- clearly he and Channing have a bond) -- but I found the clumsy interwoven flashbacks to be confusing (are ALL films doing this now? and why is Al Pacino the same age in 1986 as he is now?) and the plot of a police cover-up of two unsolved murders of low-lifes in a Queens housing project to be thin, with the most laughably unbelievable ending I have seen on the silver screen in recent memory. I should have followed my instincts and waited for this one to come out on DVD. That and a bottle of Wet and you've got yourself an evening. (Channing is smokin' from beginning to end.) My grade: C-.

'Ten Years' With Channing Tatum? Sign Me Up!

Only heard about "Ten Years" while flipping through the Village Voice on Saturday -- how "Thirty Years" of me! -- then found myself in a screening and Q&A the following afternoon with the stars, including Channing Tatum and Scott "Jason Street" Porter, at the Landmark Sunshine. Despite its leading man, "Ten Years" is a full-on indie project, complete with a first-time director, Jamie Linden (best known for having written the screenplays for "We Are Marshall" and "Dear John"), no budget and no studio support. (Hence the in-person promotion.) Despite the well-tread ground of a high school reunion, the film does manage to mine some original ground along the way, with characters who don't all neatly fall into the "mess" or "together" column. Even the more cliche storylines feel a bit more genuine as the characters seem like they might have actually grown up together and have some real chemistry, which the cast chalked up to the fact that many of them are indeed old friends (the film is set an Albuquerque high school named after the one in Winter Park, Florida, from which Porter and Linden actually graduated) and that they all stayed in the same hotel for a month making this "labor of love" for which "no one got paid." Because the film was low-budget, Linden said he shot the film in sequential order ,allowed the actors to develop characters beyond what the script called for, and did not discourage improvisation, all of which added to the film's sense of realism. (I'm positive Chris Pratt had to have improvised those lyrics to "Lady in Red" at the post-reunion karaoke outing!) Besides the always-adorable Tatum (does anyone seem more natural and likable on screen than this guy?), Kara Mara shines as a loner who surprises herself and gets surprised herself by showing up, and Brian Geraghty steals more than a few scenes as the guy whose wife had no idea he "used to be a wigger." "Ten Years" isn't exactly "The Big Chill" for the Millennial Generation, but it doesn't feel like it's trying to be, either. It's the film's casual aspirations that give it a sense of authenticity and make it definitely worth a look.

Move Over, Bennifer: I finally got around to watching the "Make Me a Supermodel" reunion show. What a hoot! I didn't even remember who half of them were yet some of 'em were acting like the who show had been around them. (Dom?) Everyone is talking about the crazy gay-straight alliance between finalists Ben and Ronnie. Bravo even surprised them with their own Brangelina-esque T-shirt dubbed Bronnie, which seemed just about right since Ben's first in control but most of it is about Ronnie. The big winner is announced on this week's show, but I haven't a clue who's going to win. My guess is Ben and Ronnie will split the vote, leaving Holly or Perry to win. (But I'm guessing Perry because he pretty much deserves it and even though Holly's a good model, she's so annoying.) (EthanSays)

Movie Night: Michael and I went to see "Stop-Loss" over the weekend. In case you've been living under a rock, the film stars Ryan Phillippe as an Iraq War veteran sent back against his wishes for another tour of duty and Channing Tatum as his fellow soldier and childhood best friend. I had high hopes for this one, knowing that it wasn't a hard-core Iraq War film -- but a look at soldiers and the effect the ongoing war is having on them. But it left us both a little cold. (Apparently we're not alone: it opened at No. 8 at the Box Office making a dismal $4.5 million.) Both the guys are smokin' hot (Channing Tatum rolling around in the mud in a pair of briefs might have been worth the 12 bucks alone) and do the best they can with the material, but there's just not a lot of character development and I never believed any of the things the characters were doing. (Abbie Cornish is gorgeous but wasted as a would-be Army wife who says about two lines in the whole film.) (Boston)
