Weekend Tennis Roundup

Titles for Tommy Paul, Karen Khachanov, Roberto Bautista Agut, Daria Kasatkina and Suzan Lamens. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.

Tommy Paul won his first ATP Tour title in Stockholm in 2021 and on Sunday the American became a champion at the ATP 250 event again. The fourth-seed sexpot defeated third seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-3 in the BNP Paribas Nordic Open final to claim his third ATP Tour title of the season. The American did not lose a set all week and lifted the trophy after one hour and 25 minutes.

Russian Karen Khachanov took out Canada's Gabriel Diallo 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 to land his second ATP win of the season in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on Sunday. The 28-year-old Hemsworth impersonator leaned on all his experience to close out the match after Diallo took the second set.

I knew it was too good to be true when Tommy and Karen each won their finals (people should always be rewarded for their attractiveness) so I figured Roberto Bautista Agut was bound to spoil the party in Antwerp -- and spoil it he did. The 36-year-old Spaniard defeated dreamy Jiri Lehecka 7-5, 6-1 to become the second-oldest tour-level champion this year (Djokovic, 37, Paris Olympics), something tennis really does not need right now.

Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten won the doubles title in Stockholm, defeating Petr Nouza and Patrik Rikl in the final, 7–5, 6–3.

Rithvik Bollipalli and Arjun Kadhe lifted the doubles title in Almaty, as they survived five match points to score a thrilling 3-6, 7-6(3), [14-12] victory over Nicolas Barrientos and Skander Mansouri in Kazakhstan on Sunday.

In Antwerp, Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler beat Robert Galloway and Aleksandr Nedovyesov, 6–4, 1–6, [10–8]

Daria Kasatkina fought past her good friend Mirra Andreeva to win the Ningbo Open title in China. Russian fifth seed Kasatkina beat her teenage compatriot 6-0 4-6 6-4 in a scrappy encounter. Andreeva broke down in tears after the match, having squandered a 3-0 lead in the final set. However, she was quickly comforted by Kasatkina, before joking: "I really tried not to cry because I knew the pictures would be ugly but I just couldn't help myself, I'm sorry guys."

No.125 Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands captured her first career WTA Tour title on Sunday by defeating No.150 Kimberly Birrell 6-0, 6-4 in the all-qualifier final(!) of the Japan Open. I happened to see a bit of Lamens's quarterfinal match against Ana Bogdan and -- please know that I don't say this lightly, having been a women's tennis superfan throughout much of my life -- I was stunned by how amateurish it looked at times. Lots of rumors are swirling that the ATP and WTA will merge in early 2025 in a 70-30 revenue split.
