It's been a while since I watched a major final live from beginning to end. (Normally I have to tune in and out or watch the replay once I know Novak won.) But this year I was invested enough to set my alarm but not so invested that I couldn't stomach seeing it unfold in real time -- and what a match we got.
Although the quality wasn't classic level, it was, as Mary Carillo put it, the fact that "no lead was safe" that made it so compelling. Of course I wanted Carlos to win -- if I had cut Alexander Zverev any wiggle room for the original allegations against him my good will was long gone after another set and other odious on-court behavior (you can take the Russian out of Russia, but you can't take the Russian out of this German). So I was thrilled and greatly relieved when the Spaniard's 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2 victory was sealed. (For those who didn't watch, the score of the fourth and fifth sets was the most misleading in tennis history.)
The women's final was another master class by Iga Swiatek, who won her third consecutive French Open title on Saturday with an emphatic 6-2 6-1 victory against Jasmine Paolini.
The diminutive Italian made a lot of new fans these past two weeks, and was rewarded with a jump in her ranking into the Top 10.
Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador and Mate Pavic of Croatia won the men’s doubles against Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday. It was an especially emotional win for the big Croatian who completed the career Slam in men's doubles after losing in Paris twice before with different partners.
Still a great effort from the Italian Stallions, who also reached the Aussie Open final in just their first season playing together.
Coco Gauff was able to put her disappointing defeat by Iga in the women's semis behind her by winning the women's doubles crown on Sunday, with partner Katerina Siniakova. The American-Czech duo beat Italians Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 in just under two hours on Court Philippe-Chatrier, securing Gauff a first doubles trophy at a Grand Slam.
Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Laura Siegemund captured the mixed doubles crown, beating Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski 6-4, 7-5 on Thursday.
Despite the loss, the runners-up looked very pleased with their performance
