Weekend Tennis Roundup (06/10)

Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are your well-deserved 2024 Roland Garros champions. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.

It's been a while since I watched a major final live from beginning to end. (Normally I have to tune in and out or watch the replay once I know Novak won.) But this year I was invested enough to set my alarm but not so invested that I couldn't stomach seeing it unfold in real time -- and what a match we got.

Although the quality wasn't classic level, it was, as Mary Carillo put it, the fact that "no lead was safe" that made it so compelling. Of course I wanted Carlos to win -- if I had cut Alexander Zverev any wiggle room for the original allegations against him my good will was long gone after another set and other odious on-court behavior (you can take the Russian out of Russia, but you can't take the Russian out of this German). So I was thrilled and greatly relieved when the Spaniard's 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2 victory was sealed. (For those who didn't watch, the score of the fourth and fifth sets was the most misleading in tennis history.)

The women's final was another master class by Iga Swiatek, who won her third consecutive French Open title on Saturday with an emphatic 6-2 6-1 victory against Jasmine Paolini.

The diminutive Italian made a lot of new fans these past two weeks, and was rewarded with a jump in her ranking into the Top 10.

Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador and Mate Pavic of Croatia won the men’s doubles against Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday. It was an especially emotional win for the big Croatian who completed the career Slam in men's doubles after losing in Paris twice before with different partners.

Still a great effort from the Italian Stallions, who also reached the Aussie Open final in just their first season playing together.

Coco Gauff was able to put her disappointing defeat by Iga in the women's semis behind her by winning the women's doubles crown on Sunday, with partner Katerina Siniakova. The American-Czech duo beat Italians Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 in just under two hours on Court Philippe-Chatrier, securing Gauff a first doubles trophy at a Grand Slam.

Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Laura Siegemund captured the mixed doubles crown, beating Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski 6-4, 7-5 on Thursday.

Despite the loss, the runners-up looked very pleased with their performance

Big boys ...

big celebration

It would have gotten very "Suddenly, Last Summer" If we'd seen this one on the Metro

Carlitos is all dressed up and going places

Paris agrees with Andrea Vavassori

Practice with the big guns

Great to see 2009 women's singles champ Svetlana Kuznetsova in the crowd

All eyes on Novak's meniscus

Is it my imagination ...

Or did Jasmine Paolini have a sex worker in her box?

How adorable was this? (And I love how small their TV is!)

Try to guess if I was sobbing like a baby when these two women I grew up worshiping -- both now multiple-time cancer survivors -- presented the women's trophies

Also nice to see fellow six-time champ Bjorn Borg with the guys

I spotted Jürgen Melzer on the grounds in Paris, and now I see why he was there!

Big Matteo is ready to return on the grass

... when he's not teasing us with his sexy new ad campaign

Incoming UCLA men's tennis freshman Kaylan Bigun won the French Open junior boys' singles title Saturday at Stade Roland Garros, becoming the first American to accomplish the feat since Tommy Paul in 2015. His name may be ridiculous, but he's body isn't.

And to think we didn't know if Sinner or Alcaraz had the energy to go the distance ...

Poor Casper Ruud looked ready to rumble before a stomach bug left him weak in his semi versus Zverev

I want to hear more about Dusan Lajovic and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina's "friendship"

Hurkacz. Hubert Hurkacz

Arthur Bouquier: How to you say "manspread" in French?

30-year-old ingenue Christian Harrison

Happy birthday, Mr. Christian

Yannick Hanfmann

Pretty boy Lorenzo Musetti

We were crushed when Quentin Halys lost in the final round of FO qualies. But it's nice to see him win a Challenger title with fellow French hottie Jonathan Eysseric

Just a photo of Alejandro Moro Cañas's ass

And front

How do I get to "work" on Jakub Menšík?

I think it's fair to say that Marcos Borderias brings out the best in Andrey Rublev

Mira Andreeva finally worked up the nerve to ask Andy Murray for a pic

Crazy stats.

And now in just the past two years, Medvedev, Alcaraz and Sinner have each ascended to the top.

Miles Bugby

is bathhouse ready

Remember when we thought Borna Coric might be the next Djokovic?

I'm gonna miss having Sugartits calling the lines next year

Vasek Pospisil is still at it -- God bless him!

Clearly his next step needs to be in front of the camera

I still dream of seeing Billy Harris in action, on the court of elsewhere ...

Tomas Machac knows what time it is

... as does Matteo B

I agree, Mr. Cobolli

Three views of Andrea Pellegro

Ryan Harrison "enjoys" retirement

Francesco Passaro is on a roll

I like where this is going between Nicolas Moreno and "his guy" whose Instagram is private

I'm getting hottie Daniel Masur a laser-tattoo-removal gift certificate for Christmas

More Nicolas Moreno, with whom I am completely smitten

In bed with Marton Fucsovics

While it sucked that Rafael Nadal drew Zverev in the first round ...

It was special to see how many big names came out to support him

And last but not least: Wasn't expecting to see a couple Burger Chef employees in the crowd.
