The luckiest trophy on earth
Italian Matteo Berrettini retained his title at the Queen's Club Championships with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of Serbia's Filip Krajinovic on Sunday. Despite the win -- plus last week's -- I'm still not seeing him as a major threat at Wimbledon. Time will tell if I'm wrong.
Ditto for Hubert Hurkacz. The Pole produced one of the performances of the 2022 grass season so far on Sunday in Halle, where he dismantled "World No.1" Daniil Medvedev 6-1, 6-4 in the championship match to claim his first title for 2022.
You may recall that Hurkacz reached the semis at Wimbledon last year, yet I don't see him as much of a contender, despite Cam Norrie's assertion that "anyone" could win this year.
Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil secured back-to-back WTA titles after Chinese opponent Shuai Zhang retired with an injury trailing 5-4 in the first set of the Birmingham Classic final on Sunday. Haddad Maia hadn't won a WTA title before arriving in England to play the Nottingham Open last week. Now she has two in her collection, both coming on grass courts. As impressive as this is, she's also playing this week, which makes me fear she will have nothing left once The Championships begin on Monday.
And in a strange coincidence, the Berlin final also couldn't be completed when Belinda Bencic got injured, forcing her to retire with Ons Jabeur 6-3, 2-1. I'd love to see the Tunisian use her crafty game to win Wimbledon, but I'm not holding my breath ...
Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos held off a stirring late comeback from Tim Puetz and Michael Venus to clinch a maiden title of 2022 in Halle on Sunday.
A crashing forehand return winner from Granollers proved the moment of magic necessary to break the deadlock late on OWL Arena, where the top seeds prevailed 6-4, 6-7(5), 14-12 in a dramatic championship match to seal their first grass-court crown as a team.
The men then proceeded to recreate Burt Reynolds's Playgirl centerfold on the grass, much to my delight
And after having an affair last week with Hubert Hurkacz, Mate Pavic returned to his man man, Nikola Mektic, and the duo won its third ATP Tour title of the 2022 season on Sunday with a comeback victory at Queen's Club.
The second seeds won their third match tiebreak in as many matches to secure a 3-6, 7-6(3), 10-6 victory against Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara.
And in Challengerland, it was nice to see Borna Coric in the winners' circle once more. The oft-injured Croat defeated Sweden's Elias Ymer 7-6(4), 6-0 in Sunday’s final in Parma.
