Arizona Sighways

While these photos from Damian have me more homesick than ever, I am feeling pretty great that my mom and I were able to bring my stepfather (Gary) home from the rehab facility yesterday. (The poor guy has been in hospital beds since Dec. 9.) Although he's confined to a shell-like brace around his torso -- he had a tumor removed from his spine on Dec. 29 -- he's a real trooper and is already getting around with the help of a walker. This afternoon I am driving my mother an hour each way to Tucson to get her twice-a-year Prolia shot. (Osteoporosis.) First thing Wednesday, I am driving Gary an hour each way to meet with his oncologist in Mesa -- a stone's throw from where we lived from 1979-1990 -- to map out a plan to treat his cancer. And then on Friday I'm driving him to his surgeon's office -- an hour each way -- to have the sutures removed from his back. Not bad for a NYC boy who hasn't driven regularly since 1992! xo

I'm really happy your step-dad has been able to come home from the hospital. I'm sorry that both parents are so ill and hope that by being home together, they can provide additional emotional support for each other.

You are brave and strong! I hope things continue to go well there.

Driving seems to stick with us, doesn't it? After 25 years living in Manhattan, I moved to Dallas for work for a few years, where I drove daily. My advice based on the mistakes I made is to be patient - don't worry about the cars behind you when you need to enter a busy street, just wait until you can clearly see a break in the traffic before you go. I almost killed myself and other people a couple of times by being too hasty.

Enjoy Arizona - it's nice to have shirtsleeve weather in January, isn't it?

While your visit could have been under better circumstances, I'm sure you're enjoying the weather. It's what I call our "rewards months," for putting up with the summers. I now live in Maricopa (the city), and getting anywhere in the valley is always an hour drive.
