Weekend Tennis Diary

After two weeks of quarantine for a large number of players, professional tennis is suddenly off the races in the run-up to the Australian Open, which begins Feb. 8. This week there are two WTA events in Melbourne -- the Yarra Valley Classic and Gippsland Trophy -- featuring all of the top players. And there are two ATP tournaments -- the Great Ocean Road Open and the Murray River Open -- featuring all of the players who aren't entangled in this idiotic ATP Cup, which begins tomorrow. (Have I mentioned how dumb I think the ATP Cup is?) Keep reading HERE.

I'm not a fan of exhibitions. But it seems the players were over the moon to finally being playing before a large crowd again ...

Novak Djokovic/Filip Krajinovic beat Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-3 to start the day in Adelaide.

Serena Williams beat Naomi Osaka 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 in a match tiebreak

Rafael Nadal beat Dominic Thiem, 7-5, 6-4

And Simona Halep defeated pro golfer Ash Barty, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8
