Frances Tiafoe Tests Positive for Coronavirus

More bad news from the world of tennis. Frances Tiafoe says he’s tested positive for the virus that causes Covid-19, making him at least the fifth highly ranked player to contract it. (Major League Baseball has also been hit hard, with 31 players tested positive.) The hunky American was in Atlanta for the All-American Team Cup — the exhibition John Isner has been aggressively defending. Tiafoe beat Sam Querrey on Friday despite feeling under the weather. While I applaud his getting tested and withdrawing from the event, it’s unclear why he was playing in the first place given that he said after yesterday’s match that he hadn’t “been feeling the best the last couple of days.” Also not sure what if anything was done to ensure the health of Sam, who returned today and defeated Tommy Paul. (God help the organizers if so much as one hair on Tommy’s head gets infected with this potentially life-threatening virus.) Here’s hoping the USTA does a better job when play begins in Flushing Meadows next month.

Get well soon, Frances.

Meanwhile, Tommy’s quaranbuddy, Reilly Opelka, withdrew with a knee injury. The only good thing about this is that it allowed LOCAL HUNK Kevin King to fill in as an alternate, looking dreamy as he got blown off the court by John "Coronabro" Isner.
