Thoughts on Melbourne

Haven't been blogging much about it, but have actually been fairly engrossed in some of this year's Australian Open. Tickled to death to see Venus Williams' return to form, landing in the quarterfinals for the first time in ages with a three-set win over Agnieszka Radwanska. I've been told I'm a "hate" tennis fan these days -- well, of the women's game at least -- but my hatred of Victoria Azarenka was nicely complemented by appreciation for Dominika Cibulková, whose athleticism is a sight to behold. I'm excited by the run of Madison Keys -- whose power game reminds me of Jennifer Capriati -- although I'm fearful she will be the next [insert up-and-coming-player-who-flames-out-after-finally-showing-promise-in-a-major HERE]. The Sharapova-Bouchard quarter could be fun -- depending on which Maria shows up -- even if I find Genie's backhand to be better-suited for the Nor'easter headed this way than Gland Slam tennis. (Couldn't Chrissie do anything about that?) The Serena-Muguruza match was awfully entertaining, even if it seemed Garbine sort of caved unnecessarily.

The men's draw is shaping up nicely. While I went into it thinking it was Djokovic's to lose, I have this nagging feeling Tomas Berdych could make a breakthrough, a la Stan Wawrinka last year. (On the Rafa front and major front.)  Wouldn't mind that too much -- it is good for the game -- although another win for Nole or Stan wouldn't bother me much, either.

LOVE Venus not only being in the second week of a major for the first time in a long while but I think she is a serious threat, if she can squeak by Keys, who's racquet seems to be a magic wand sometimes. (I agree, hope she's not another Sands, King, Oudin, McHale, Stephens, etc who with are going to make that next step and then they seem to fall off the face of the earth.) I loath Federer so I am always hoping Nadal wins to edge closer to 17 majors so we can stop hearing about Federer being the best (at the very least we wouldn't have to hear AS much about a Federer.)

Happy to see Venus playing well too. Can you believe Nadal's collapse on the courts last night? Never would have predicted that final score.
