Pop-Tarts Turn 50!

My love for Pop-Tarts is legendary. A youthful tour of the Kellogg's factory in Battle Creek got things rolling and I really never looked back. I once mortally wounded my great aunt Dorothy by announcing I'd rather eat them than the Thanksgiving dinner she had worked several days to prepare. And one of my earliest blog posts was a review -- the short-lived (and underappreciated) Mint Chocolate Chip variety. I wrote about the Times Square pop-up store in 2010, and more recently weighed in on the Peanut Butter and the Chocolate Peanut Butter creations. But like most products I love, my favorite is invariably discontinued -- which is why my brother Terence sent a late-night email letting me know that the defunct Chocolate Vanilla Creme -- always hard to find and always my fave -- is back for a limited time only to celebrate the pastry's 50th birthday! Terence found them in Frederick, Maryland, but with shelf space so limited here in the city, I'm concerned I might not get so lucky here in the city. But if anyone comes across a box -- and or some Qwisp -- I might just be willing to meet you in a dark alley for a handoff.

Learn the history of the Pop-Tarts in his great video via Time magazine, which explains how Post actually came up with the idea, but its ill-advised Country Squares name didn't catch on. plus the story behind Milton the Toaster!
