Can We Talk?

Can we talk about how sharp and cutting-edge Joan Rivers' stand-up is after all these years? (If you saw the recent roast of her on Comedy Central, then you already saw that she was 10 times funnier than most of her roasters.) Michael and I had an absolute hoot last night watching Joan try out new material last night in Times Square at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. The minute she took the stage she promised everyone would be offended by the end of the evening -- and she wasn't kidding. (Jews, Chinese, disabled, blind, AIDS patients, tourists, children, Paula Abdul, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Madonna, even Lourdes.) It's easy to forget how unusual it was for a comic to go after celebrities the way Joan does. But seeing her perform now -- at 76! -- it becomes clear how many comics owe their routines to her (I'm looking at you, Kathy, Chelsea, Sandra). Afterward, we got to spend some time with the legend backstage where she immediately commented on my post-tennis rosy cheeks ("Look at you, such nice color!") and even pitched me her new TV show, "How'd You Get So Rich," when she was told about my blog! Say what you will about Joan's reconstructed face, there's no surgery to make a 76-old-woman still move like she's 60. The old broad's in great shape, and so's her act. (A HUGE thank-you to Chip Duckett and the staff for taking such great care of us!)

Joan performs most Wednesdays in September and October. Click HERE for show details and enter the code "Ken212" to receive $5 off tickets.

Joan was performing in NYC during Pride this Summer, and I really regret not going while I was there on vacation.

I knew I was going to REALLY regret it when I went to the Butter Cream Bakery on 2nd Ave in Midtown and spotted a photo of Joan on the wall. It was a recent pic of her posing with the manager at the bakery.

After realizing how excited I was after seeing the pic, I also realized right there and then that I probably should have gone to the show a few nights before. Can you imagine how much better the already amazing cupcakes would have tasted if I had?

Lesson learned.

She looks like Madame now.

Awesome! I really hate what she has done to her face. She is such a pioneer in comedy, even more so for females and I think her face has cheapened her image over the years. But brilliantly biting and funny as ever!

The plastic surgeries aside, I LUV JOAN!! I met her here in Chicago when she was doing her "What Becomes A Semi-Legend Most?" tour in 1982/1983 and she was very nice!! She's one of a few comedians/comediennes out there who take the time after the shows to meet her audience - CAN WE TALK?!? =)

Kudos to Joan Rivers for being honest about the effects of hysterectomy! In the new book about hysterectomy, THE H WORD, Chapter 48 is titled "Joan Rivers"Liars: hysterectomy didn't improve sex life." You can read about how hysterectomy ruins sex at http://www.hersfoundation.org.
