Afternoon Delight: Matt Cassel

When New England Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel -- a California native whose family's home was destroyed in the 1994 Northridge quake -- steps under center against the Jets on Sunday, replacing one quarterback legend and playing against another, he will not have the vast experience of Tom Brady or Brett Favre. In fact, Cassel has not started a meaningful game since his senior season at Chatsworth High School nine years ago. He backed up the Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC. After the Patriots used a seventh-round pick on him in the 2005 draft, Cassel has spent the last three seasons carrying a clipboard behind Brady. (NYT)

This certainly is the handsome Cassel's moment to shine, and my boss predicts it will be the moment when everyone comes to realize just how overrated Brady is. (Ouch!) I wonder if Matt gets to bang Giselle if he goes undefeated in the regular season ...

How come quarterbacks are often so good-looking? Do their looks give them the confidence to grow into quarterbacks, or are they more likely to get chosen for the job because they're hot?

I accidentally stumbled on your blog so wasn't sure to really leave a comment. But I couldn't go away without saying that calling Tom Brady overrated is just not accurate. The man is a three-time Super Bowl-winning QB and has broken nearly every major QB record. That's just kinda silly and obviously a bit partisan, NYer.

Well, I guess my boss' point is WE'LL SEE if Brady was so instrumental in those three Super Bowls. If they go all the way without him, that would be a sign ...

I remember that the Patriots let Cassel play a few minutes last season during games they were winning by a large margin. If memory serves, Brady had to be sent back into the game to replace Cassel to make sure Cassel didn't blow the Pat's lead.

I'm excited for Cassel. At least in some respects, he's better looking than Brady. Doesn't look as lanky.
