Ruling: Gays Are People Too!

"We ... conclude that in view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples." -- California Supreme Court, May 15, 2008

I'm more relieved than ecstatic (but I am ecstatic!). I only wish Mildred Loving had lived to see this day. (NYT) But meanwhile this headline just came in from my home state: Ariz. House OKs amendment to ban same-sex marriage (AP) I would call it one step forward, two steps back. But given California's place in the pecking order vs. Arizona's, I'm gonna call it five steps forward, a half-step back. All in all, a monumental day for civil rights.

The irony is that Jodie Foster and her partner just split up.

Sucks for them.

Good, potentially, for me. :^)

There is a small point to be made, which is lost on the media. The California court did not overturn a ban (which would in effect legalize marraige between same sex couples); rather, the court said that the ban was unconstitution (which is not the same as making gay marraige legal). An inportant step. If you want to help prevent the change to the California constitution banning same sex marraige, then publish this website: http://www.equalityforall.com/
