No Pain, No Gain?

Reality television may not be very real, but I have to admit that the controversy surrounding last week's episode of Bravo's "Workout" has even spilled into my own home. For those who don't watch the show, gym owner Jackie Warner and her office manger (Lisa) got caught making cracks about the fake boobs of one her trainer's clients -- only to find out the woman was a breast cancer survivor who had reconstructed breasts. (Lisa was the one who said it -- Jackie was sort of laughing and going along with it.)
Now, given what was shown on television (I'll address the editing rumors in a bit), I've been siding with Jackie who says Lisa apologized to the person who overheard the rude comments -- hey, shit happens, I know; if I had a dime for every time I got caught making fun of someone's lisp -- but then later refused to discuss the incident with the trainer (Brian Peeler) whose client was made fun of. Jackie ended up firing Brian when he wouldn't take no for an answer when she told him she would not discuss the issue with him further.

Since the heated episode aired last Tuesday, a petition has been started to get Jackie and the show removed from Bravo's schedule, and one of the show's main sponsors, Propel water (made by Gatorade), has reportedly dropped out. (I say reportedly because the alleged statement from the company doesn't even seem to know the correct name of the show, referring to it instead as "The Workout.")

So here's the thing: Jackie's "clearing the air" statement to fans unveiled yet another layer of the reality TV myth: It turns out the trainers who "work" there aren't even her real staff. (I actually thought it was plausible that they put a camera inside a Beverly Hills gym and all the trainers happened to be extremely photogenic, but no.) It turns out they were CAST to be on THE SHOW -- so right off the bat I have a lot of sympathy for Jackie because it was obvious they put Good Ole Southern Boy Brian Peeler in there just to drum up trouble. (To me, Peeler obviously has a problem with lesbians, hence Jackie's wariness.)
That being said, I do not think Brian was AT ALL out of line for asking to speak to Jackie about what happened -- it was his client after all -- and I agree with her detractors that it would have been far more professional of Jackie to hear Brian out and handle the situation more professionally. But at the end of the day she does OWN the gym so she does MAKES THE RULES. Listen, if I went into my boss's office and told him I wanted to talk about something I thought he'd done "wrong" and he got defensive and told me he had addressed the issue and wasn't going to talk about it with me, I feel like I would have to accept that. But I feel like because she's a woman, Jackie is being held to a different standard than any male boss -- let alone OWNER -- would be. (Like it or not, she doesn't have to explain herself to Brian Peeler or any other subordinate if she doesn't want to. If he doesn't like it, he doesn't have to work there.) And getting back to the editing rumor, some people are saying that Jackie may have been the one who actually made the fake boob comment (she denies this completely and says things were edited to make the whole atmosphere look more negative than it really is) and got her office manager to take the fall. Even if this were the case, the apologize was made -- so that's still not really any of Brian's business. In my eyes, the fact that the person who overheard the comment (people aren't allowed to talk in their own offices?) ran to Brian and told him about it reflects poorly on this person -- who happens to be the cancer survivor's boyfriend. (Did he tell her, too?)

Michael completely disagrees with me on all of these points. I can't hardly wait for tonight's episode. Michael and I may not be speaking anymore by week's end!

(I also have major issues with the way Gregg treated Queen of Excuses Deenie. My friend Micah happens to be one of the fellow cast mates on the show and has more on that over on his blog.)

Maybe I'm missing something, but aren't these Reality shows mostly scripted drivel, rather than "real"?

Except Project Runway, of course, which I'm going into withdrawl over....

You couldn't be more wrong if your butt were on backward. Jackie Warner has been a pill this entire season. This really isn't about cancer, it's about respect. The premise of the gym was to help overweight people. If as an owner, you allow an employee to degrade any client you have a major problem and an apology isn't enough to solve the problem. Jackie Warner is your typical "I'm the boss so I can do what I want" person who is doomed to fail because they are obviously lack the necessary management skills to own a business.
Jackie Warner herself said that trainers have self image problems, well so do people who have plastic surgery. Being a lesbian doesn't mean you can degrade or allow someone to degrade any person of the same sex. What she allowed to happen is equal to you making fun of an advertiser's penis in one of your column for all the world to see. They knew they were on camera.
The last thing is that what was said in the real world would be defined as sexual harassment . Sexual harassment isn't just for men, it applies to all people, man, woman, gay and lesbian.

Kenneth, I love your blog but completely disagree with you about this situation. If I were that woman's boyfriend, I certainly would have complained to the trainer if I overheard another employee of the gym ridiculing my girlfriend to the OWNER of the gym. That would also be the last time we ever set foot in the place. Whether or not Brian is a "real" employee or not, Warner handled the whole thing poorly and has to accept the consequences.

It always amuses me that people go on and on about employer/employee etiquette when discussing this episode. As you pointed out yourself - this is reality TV. Proper etiquette/professionalism has nothing to do with this situation. Bottom line - she's been acting like a raging cunt lately, and the crowd has turned on her.

And, based on the last episode, so have the editors.

Jackie Warner is a poor excuse for a human being gay, bi, or otherwise. She talks about being professional, and then she has sex with all of her bi-curious females trainers that work at her gym behind her girlfiends back.
She could not have handled the Peeler situation any worst. She and her assistant sat there and talked about a woman fake breasts, when the client had breast cancer.
Yes, Brian had every right to ask her why she engaged is such dialogue, and he gets fred? I am no longer watching this show.

All the editing in the world doesn't erase the fact that Jackie Warner just a horrible person. That has nothing to do with her gender or her sexuality either, she's just a cunt. I think Brian is just as bad as her (and maybe even worse in some respects. Her selfishness is au pauer to that of Paris Hilton's et all. Her business management skills are on the same level of a pre-schoolers (the selfishness, the no-accountability, the lies). The BBB should shut her down & make her work at a regular gym to see what the real world is like (of course, she'd probably manipulate some poor soul to get her out of it). That said, of course I'll still watch the show!

irisgirl: I think you're right. I virtually never watch reality shows (in fact, I never heard of this gym show until this controversy) but from what I understand they're more-or-less scripted. And silly.

First of all I like Peeler, not sure why I am attracted to him. Jackie gets on my last nerve so I am probably not to neutral on this subject.

I am ready for flipping out to come back on, now that is some homosexual drama!

aeuSorry, dude, but you are way off on this one. The fact that Jackie Warner bitches and moans about how Peeler shows her no respect, but she and her office manager go so far as to disrespect a paying client of her business, particularly a cancer survivor, is downright ludicrous and disgusting. Why didn't Jackie fire her office manager for saying those things? So it's OK to make fun of a cancer survivor's boobs when her boyfriend is near enough to overhear, but not to demand and explanation as to why your client was insulted by the company's staff? Jackie Warner is disgusting. She makes me sick. I'm shocked you side with her.

Kenneth you cant be more wrong. The instructors sell the gym. They are like Jackies sales agents. When one of Peelers customers was disrespected like that, Jackie had an obligation to discuss it with peeler, just like Peeler had an obligation to discuss the situation with his boss. She is only making excuses that most of it ended up on the cutting room floor. She may be the boss, but it is not her alone that brings the customers in the door. She needs to get over herself or else her gym will be just a memory and she will be working for someone else.

First of all, from what I saw on that episode, it was Jackie's assistant that was making fun of Peeler's client to Jackie and once the clients' partner confronted them, she and her assistant both apologized to the guy. As far as Peeler's concern, I believe that a lot of Jackie's discomfort with him has been due to the fact that he has been badmouthing her to fellow trainers behind her back and her assistant had went to Jackie afterwards to inform her what he was doing and how he went over her to contact the associate that was working with Jackie in regards to the trainer Doug's foundation that were working on. Let's face it, it is Jackie's gym and if he has a problem with her, then he should not be there..and therefore, with that being said, I understand fully where she was coming from and he deserved just what he got. So, get the facts before you start assuming things that are not TRUE!!!!!
