Death Becomes Her

I may claim to be against capital punishment, but I'm willing to make an exception in this case ... (NYP)

I Called It!

I told you this was gonna happen. And who minds looking at Janko Tipsarevic for another round or two? Andy looked like he had better things to do anyway ... (AFP)

Coming Attractions: 'Holding Trevor'

From what I've seen and read, "Holding Trevor" promises to be an interesting film you might want to be on the lookout for this summer:

Trevor Holden has just witnessed his boyfriend Darrell overdose on heroin -- again. And as his oldest friend, Trevor feels a responsibility to help Darrell in his latest attempt at sobriety, much to the dismay of his own best friends Jake and Andie. But, when Darrell starts using again Trevor is finally ready to call it quits. And just when he does, he meets the ever-so-charming Ephram. Simply being everything that Darrell is not immediately wins Ephram a number of points. As Trevor’s relationship with Ephram quickly progresses, it starts to put a strain on his friendships with Jake and Andie. Jake, the self-proclaimed sex-addict, is starting to worry a little bit about his past catching up with him, namely in the form of HIV. And Andie, who drunkenly ends her sexual dry spell with a one-night stand, realizes that Jake might have less to worry about than she does. Meanwhile, Ephram accepts a job thousands of miles away in New York City, and he wants Trevor to go with him. Now, what started out as Trevor’s own personal existential journey, turns into a path that will lead everyone to what is most important: themselves.

Page 1 Consider (06/26)

  • German Engineering: Sure, I'm an American so couldn't care less about soccer. But with guys like Michael Ballack and Lukas Podolski running around the field, it was hard not to root for Germany in yesterday's Euro 2008 semifinal. (NYT)

  • To Catch a Settlement: NBC has settled a $105-million lawsuit filed by the family of a man who killed himself when confronted with cameras for the series "To Catch a Predator." I have ambivalent feeling about that show to begin with (entrapment, anyone?), but this was a really f**ked up situation that involved NBC sending their crew to the man's house AFTER he had declined to meet up with the fake underage boy he'd been chatting with online. (To think he missed out on those just-baked chocolate chip cookies.) (NYT)

  • The Nomi Song: Have I died and gone to heaven or is there talk that "Showgirls" may be becoming a Broadway musical? (FilmExperience)

  • Heaven Can Wait: I'm not sure if Al Sharpton was outing Anderson Cooper on TV the other night when he said he supported the gray fox's decision to live his life the way he does even if it means he's "going to hell." But I am sure that the Good Lord got a kick out of "the reverend" passing judgment on anyone -- anytime, anyplace. (Queerty)

  • Love and Love: I've always had a place in my heart for the unpredictable Marat Safin. So even thought I felt a little bad for Novak Djokovic for drawing the currently undseeded Russian cutie in the second round at Wimbledon, I couldn't help but love it when Safin beat him in straight sets. Their post-match makeout session was only icing on the cake. (AP)

  • Mind Your Gay Business: The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) has announced the launch of BIZ, an online publication covering all facets of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) business world. Visit BIZ here.

  • 'Winning' Bidder: How awful and friendless must you be to spend $5,700 on an eBay auction to be a bridesmaid in a total stranger's wedding? (Which is to say nothing of the pathetic couple who is willing to take the cash.) (NYT)

  • Goldwater Country: I was greatly relieved to see that an idiotic attempt at a constitutional ban on same-sex failed yesterday in my home state of Arizona. (EastValleyTribune) Naturally, conspiracy theories are already brewing in the Valley of the Sun.

  • Gay-Positive Ads: The Commercial Closet Association, a nonprofit that educates the advertising industry on including responsible images of gays and lesbians in mainstream ads, announced its nominees yesterday for their 4th Annual Images in Advertising Awards. Fifty ads and their respective ad agencies are nominated and winners will be announced July 28 in New York City. This year, Wrigley’s Eclipse, Orbitz.com, Levi’s, Chemistry.com, and Dolce & Gabbana are up for Outstanding Commercial. A full list of nominees and the ad themselves can be viewed here.

  • Supersize Complaints: If you thought Morgan Spurlock's gay-friendly pornstache would keep him in GLAAD's good graces, then think again. (GLAAD)

  • Separated at Birth: Colin Farrell and Nicole Richie Amy Winehouse? (LARagMag)

  • Virginia Really Is for Lovers: You gotta love those two guys who got married in Virginia. Yes, I said Virginia. And no, same-sex marriages aren't legal there. (Towleroad)

  • Cinderella in Cleats: This picture of Fresno State slugger Tommy Mendonca is for Scioto, who threatened to take my gay card away if I didn't post it. Sexy Tommy and his Bulldogs upset George to win the College World Series last night.(KCS)

  • RIP: Wilber Hardee, a farm boy turned grill cook who went on to open the first Hardee's hamburger stand in 1960, starting a chain that now has nearly 2,000 restaurants in the United States and overseas, died Friday at his home in Greenville, N.C. He was 89. (NYT)
  • Sporting Goods: Sean Avery

Say what you will about the Devil and her Prada-wearing ways, Anna Wintour knows how to surround herself with handsome men. (Anna and I are actually similar in a lot of ways: We share impossibly straight hair and a weakness for jocks.) When she's not cavorting around Europe with Roger Federer, she's back at the Conde Nast headquarters bossing around her NHL star intern, Sean Avery of the New York Rangers. Avery, who pleaded for the internship to satisfy his lifelong clothes obsession, has quickly warmed up to all of those internlike responsibilities, like posing for a 10-page fashion spread, writing music reviews, keeping a daily blog and guest-editing the Men's Vogue Web site. (Reminds me of my intern days!)

Avery shoots -- and scores -- with posts like this:
My day job requires everyone on the team to wear shirts and ties to all home and away games as well as on the team plane, and I'll say it right here: The New York Rangers are probably the best-dressed team in pro sports. (I'll only take some credit for that.) For my first day on the job at Vogue, though, I wore my usual New York City dinner attire -- jeans, limited edition Nikes, a Raf Simons dress shirt, and a bow tie. First up was getting my ID card and my company email address after a brief meeting with the magazine's managing editor, Laurie Jones. As I saw it, this meeting was called to find out if I was actually here to work or just to meet girls. I assured Ms. Jones that I was here to work -- to see what really went into running a legendary fashion magazine -- and in return I would make minimum wage and check in with her weekly.

And then it was lunchtime. The cafeteria in the Conde Nast building -- which houses Vogue and Men's Vogue and Vanity Fair and The New Yorker and about every other magazine you've ever heard of aside from The Hockey News -- is filled with some of the best-looking and best-dressed women in New York. Even aside from that distraction, my first attempt at getting lunch didn't go so well. You see, I needed two trays to hold my plates of beef stroganoff and my salad (which alone could probably feed four) and my two bottles of water and my Jello for dessert. To have two full trays in the Conde Nast cafeteria is like seeing a hockey player wearing skinny jeans -- it just doesn't happen. And while my stick-handling on the ice keeps getting better and better, my tray-handling leaves a bit to be desired. I still can't find the girl who fled the cafeteria with beef stroganoff spilled all over her, but just in case she's reading this: You can find me on the twelfth floor, and I owe you a new outfit. I now limit myself to one tray at a time. (Via Gawker by way of Men's Vogue)
